What is the Zapper weight and $?

I think as long as it is light and cheap, any slalom boat is going to be better than waiting around for the perfect one to come along.

I have a slalom boat for sale, but it is southern CT.

Roy used to third?

Well, first of all, I expect no one wants to read about what Roy is used to doing, not doing, and having done to him. As far as some dweeb C1ers coming to some dweeb open boat race and kicking some old/slow open boaters' butts, it does remind us that much of open boat slalom racing is a very "big fi...

Micro-spheres and epoxy

I have used micro-spheres mixed with epoxy to form a bondo-like material for this application. Remove all loose foam remains, paint the area where the foam used to be with epoxy (with hardner but no spheres) and then right away squeegie in the spheres/epoxy/hardner mix. After it gets hard, sand or r...

Paul Mason's book

Well, Paul Mason in "Thrill of the Paddle" mentions that he and his friends used to do this a lot. I have not attempted such a modification, but I would (1) be sure to use epoxy resin (2) design the patch so that it was fairly flexible (e.g, have mostly polyester cloth in the lay-up), (3) make the p...

There are easier ways to get a boat

Well, I suggest you first contact the designer of your boat and get permission to mold it. While it may be legal to slightly modify a shape, and then call it your own, it seems to be to be in poor taste. You can be sure the designer spent a lot of time and trouble developing the boat. Clearly, some ...

Werner Bandit Carbon & Glass

I have one in carbon and many of my friends have the glass ones. It seems the problem with these paddles, regardless of material, is that the blades simply wear away. Much faster than paddles with more beef in the tip (e.g., Mitchell, Viking). I think the carbon and glass blades wear at about the sa...

Wilderness use or not?

I think the first question, to someone who has a lot of wilderness miles, is "are you thinking of a new paddle for day trips or for big-time wilderness up in Canada?" I would say, if it is a wilderness paddle, you will want a wood or fiberglass shaft and not carbon. Any paddle maker who does custom ...
