Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs

Bob and Jim, Thanks for the info. I have never layed up a boat but have done a couple of pairs of carbon knee cups. So I have a little experience. For my boat, I'm trying a lost foam technique. I've carved a foam plug and covered it in packing tape. Next I plan to glass to plug with carbon fiber, hu...

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs

Thanks for the info Bob. Are you happy with the stiffness and durability of your hull? Does "3-4 x 5 oz Carbon" mean 3 layer of carbon in some areas and 4 layers in other areas? Yes, plus the final carbon/kevlar layer. The boat is really stiff. I also used some polyester ...

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs

Have you hand laid carbon before? If not practise some first - just make some flat panels on a board, or a boat cradle or something. When you wet glass it turns transparent when you get enough resin into it, when you wet carbon it stays black and shiny, there is no visual guide to tell you if it is ...

Right now I am planning to do 5 layers of all carbon with no coring for both hull and deck with ...

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs

The Layup: Deck - 5 oz Carbon, Spheretex, 5 oz Carbon. It came out about 5 lbs with the coaming Hull - 3-4 x 5 oz Carbon, 1 x 6 oz Carbon/Kevlar with bow and stern reinforcements. I decided not to core the hull because I have had bad experiences ...

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs

Bob, Your boat looks great. It must feel great to paddle a boat of your own design. Would you mind sharing your layup, how much epoxy you used and any tricks you learned? Also, which areas you added extra material. I too am building a slalom C1 and am just to the point of laying it up. I think I wan...

Re: diy paddle blade

... a final very thin coat of epoxy, but only if you need it. As the last step, put on a coat of spar varnish for UV protection. I did a very similar project (upgrading a cheap wooden paddle), and years later it is still going strong. I used West System 105 resin with the 205 hardener. I got everything ...

Re: diy paddle blade

... epoxy, cacamite or similar) rather than buying a board, if you have different coloured offcuts you can arrange them to make it pretty too. Such a project is more feasible than an all FRP blade, should cost less and if you choose your wood carefully weigh about the same. There are loads of guides ...

The op would like to thank the very few who offered knowledgeable information. I'm still trying to figure out why the others bothered ...

Re: diy paddle blade

If you have all the broken parts you could just glass over it. It'll be really ugly, super heavy and it'll cost more for materials than it ever could be worth.
Really, it's not a good project.

Re: diy paddle blade

It's a project not for the faint of heart... When I was building paddles, I went through 20+ prototypes before I found an "ideal" cruising layup. Not counting the molds and lots of tools, I'd use $40-$50 in materials for each ...

rebuilt the hubs and put on new tires rated for 6000lbs. added a jack on the tongue. cleaned the lights and rewired the entire system. hazard stripe is manditory in zombie land.
