In our family I need to change sides when I paddle with my daughter and grand daughters. My wife and son paddle opposite. While I am not as confident, it is a good thing to be able to do.

You could make your own straps from 2" webbing (seat belt, flat, or tubular) and associated 2" triglides and buckles. I have a pair of porters. I don't wear them for boating, but think i probably could. I personally like shoes without a substantial sole for canoeing. The porters are the lightest, most comfortable summer shoes I've owned. I wear them all the time, and am going on my second summer. Holding up great....
