Re: Open boats at FIBArk?

It's worth noting that FIBArk boating events are only a small part of the festival these days. It's more about beer, music, and break-apart floats.

Re: Open boats at FIBArk?

Flow likely won't be high this year. Snowpack is just now catching up to normal. Optimistically 1000 CFS, which I think is a good open boat level. Plus a lot Colorado canoers have gone to decked boats and shouldn't be excused from high water. The reason the Front Rangers usually give is that they do...

Re: Boat of the Week - Esquif Zoom

Zoom's initial instability is evident when going slow, but not when paddling with speed. The harder thing I find about paddling the boat is that it also looses it's spin when going fast. I'm told my paddle goes naturally into the dimple when ruddering without me actually noticing. The dimple allows ...

Re: Boat of the Week - Dagger Cascade

I had a Cascade longer than another whitewater boat that I've owned except maybe an Ocoee. It got me down a lot of runs. The aspect I liked most about it was the ability to pack it with overnight gear. My longest trip was five nights. Paddling a Cascade didn't develop my boat control skills since it...

Re: tandem oc2 tips anyone

For OC tandems in the 14’ or longer category, it’s hard for the bow partner to sense how much boat and momentum is behind them. The stern paddler has a much better view of the overall boat angle. Experienced bow paddlers tend to paddle like they were solo and make it hard for the stern to react to q...

Re: Option boating in AZ

I don’t know your paddling experience, but the video makes it look like you aren’t being aggressive. The most important step to staying dry in a canoe is picking a line and working hard to achieve it. I hope to be OC2ing the Salt in a couple of weeks if the flow cooperates. I’ve paddled the run thre...

Re: Boat of the week experinece: Zoom

I’m a similar weight and have been in the Zoom briefly. I have mostly been paddling in tight and low volume, but did one run on bigger water. The Zoom was smooth in the squirrellies, but I was surprised by getting stopped in a hole. I haven’t been flipping in “quick succession”, but found myself ups...

Re: Boat of the Week - Dagger Atom

Improved my paddling after being in a Cascade. Still fun to paddle which I cannot think of being the case for other mass produced boats of similar age.

Re: outfitting my Option

Adding foam hasn’t changed my alignment in the hooks just added more contact to be locked in better.

The consensus for a while now has been bow up is the worst trim in whitewater/play boats. It makes the boat less responsive and slower turning. Neutral or a little bow down is considered best.

Re: outfitting my Option

I’m using the BF bulkhead in a Zoom. I’m 5’8” with fairly big thighs. I’ve added wedges under the hooks to force my knees out, carved into the sidewall foam where my knees press out and added ankle blocks to keep my feet vertical against the pegs. I also added 1” of foam to the back of the saddle. I...

Re: Winter in the Grand Canyon

Would you guys be interested in a Cataract Canyon trip this spring?

That'd be a good preparation for a GC trip.

Re: Grand Canyon solo

Doug finished his trip. Here's his run of Lava Falls: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGjBtk2uZog Here's what Doug says about his line: "Yeah, the V-Wave filled me up. it shows better from the front, but it's when I disappear at the start of the run. From then on I'm full, and fighting to be upright ...
