Thanks for the write-up on your MF trip. Can't imagine canoeing it at that flow. But, on the other hand, any pictures to share?

Interesting question. How about Blossom Bar on the Rogue River. Have only done the permitted section once, at 2900 CFS at Grants Pass. At that flow in a Dagger Dimension, we felt pushed to our limit. I would call it a class IV drop. Or, the Chutes on the Middle Fork of the Salmon. We've done the MF ...

I revisited the AWA web site, and looked at their classification for the Trinity River, California, Cedar Flat to Burnt Ranch gorge section, which they rate as a class IV-V run. I then read their definitions of a class IV-V, and I think it's a fitting description for the run. And compare that to the...

Gary B and Marc, Maybe I needed to to be a little bit more clear regarding my initial post. I know what the ratings are, and they are available in the majority of my whitewater books. My issue is, that I want a citable source-Web address that I can use when I do my letter to the editor. Ideally, suc...

Wanted: River rating source

Please don't consider this a dumb question! I'm trying to locate Web sources for River classifications, i.e. definition of class 1 through class 5. I've been unable to find information on the ACA web site, or AWA, or the Red Cross. I'm sure it's there, I'm just not going about it correctly! This is ...

I have been thinking about this the issue further. Going through what other people have written, I do think that attitude unfortunately can play a part in getting new people into this activity. Two examples: Back at the turn-of-the-century, don't you just love that term!, for several years two local...

In my humble opinion, I think most of the boats out there today are too high performance for the lack of a better term, for beginners to start in. On the West Coast, and my part of Northern California, open white-water boating is basically dead. That includes kayaks. Right now, the hot rage is sea k...

Since I don't have anything pressing to do right now, you're going to get the long story! I guess you could say that the story behind this picture is that my sweetie proposed to me on the banks of the South Fork of the Smith River during the State of Jefferson Slalom Races in 1993. It's all his faul...

Meditative photos

This is the time of year that I stop and think: I'm so thankful that I enjoy the sport of whitewater canoeing so much. For me, these three pictures have captured a part of what makes paddling so special. When life gets stressful at work or at home, I take a deep breath, and take a minute to revisit ...
