Memories

This post gave me a flashback to a friend who used to paddle rivers in the northeast with an OC-2 and his partner "Flo", his inflatable flotation partner, in the front seat. It was quite the scene to see him dropping through a class III rapid and yelling at her, while smacking her with the paddle......

Colorado

It is not about the destination... it is about the trip.

Unfortunately, I will not make it this year.

Spark!

I have been VERY pleased with the durability of my Spark. It has held up better than some of my Royalex boats. I do try to paddle it well, but I also weigh 185 - 190 pounds and I do not go easy on it (for example- paddled it in the Taylorville section of the Beaver River, see http://www.americanwhit...

Agreeing with Adam

I agree with Adam. There are "good runs" and then there are lines on those runs you never thought possible. Take the Dryway. There are the straightforward lines and that is okay practice. But there are some interesting lines you can choose that are much tougher. These make for great practice, and pr...

No felt

Felt soles have been associated with the transport of "rock snot" on and between rivers, and therefore should be avoided. I just learned about the invasion of rock snot to my favorite river: http://newhartfordplus.com/2011/03/30/d ... er-by-dep/.

Cascade

I agree with the posts from JKaz and Bob... mostly because they have been 2 strong influences on my technique. Some of your concerns may be related to the Cascade. My recollection is that it does not respond well to an off-side lean under flatwater conditions. When compared to boats that respond to ...

A cruel, cruel woman

Okay, here is a true story about strength (or muscle bulk, so essentially the same thing) and technique. At the 2008 North American Championships I raced in the OC1 Master Rec class and I had good run. At one point I noticed my wife was eyeing a certain young, athletic boater who had raced in the OC...

Balance

I agree with the balance of technique and fitness. Core strength is critical as is aerobic fitness. I started working with weights about 3 - 4 years ago. As my strength improved there were modest improvements in my slalom racing. One of my exercises was pull-ups and as I got stronger I kept adding p...

More on this

Lots of good information here. I am a physical therapist and have some additional thoughts, but first recognize that I do NOT work with these types of problems. If you are in an intensive care unit with a traumatic brain injury or cardiac disease, I am the guy to see. Tendinitis- go see someone who ...

I appreciate this site for my daily dose of virtual canoeing... since right now all I have is future whitewater with all this snow around me. Thanks.
