... cut Ultramax - wouldn't take too much to shorten either. One big difference though, most of the modern boats are "cab" forward, while the older Max boats have more in the stern.

Slalom C1 for heavy paddler & relative beginner (in slalom)?

... were that it is much easier than my Maverick which I am at least 30kg too heavy for. Other manufacturers either don't build C1s or list max weights way below what I need. Obviously being mostly US based y'all might come up with some names I can't get over here, but let me know anyway, ...

... your local (and non-local) canoe companies!!!! Note: Its just a darn shame the L'Edge and Prelude are now MIA as well as the Probe, Viper, XL and Max series. :-( Hopefully we'll see more Big Dogs in the area to try out.

Esquif Zephyr for Big Guy?

... just popped up locally, though, and it's a great deal... I'm wondering if that boat will perform for a 250-260lb paddler. I think Esquif says the max is about 220lb, but it seems like they underrate their boats a bit in this department, as my brother is about 240 and he has great results in a ...

Re: A Three Year Project: Slalom C1 to the latest specs

... but 2 gallons must weigh about 10kg which is more than Bobs entire boat. By weight you probably want to be around 50/50 carbon/epoxy to get near max strength so 2 gallons should be enough allowing for practise, waste and so on. You will be throwing the stuff away with roller refills and washing ...

Moderately Well as a life goal

... But when I'm scrunched down in the hull no one one notices. Thinking of warmingg up some seam seal overnight on top of the house water heater for max viscosity and then dumping in the whole tube into an "stale dated" inflated Voyageur bag and slossing it around. Why not, a cheap try? Most of the ...

Re: Boat of the Week - Perception Gyra Max

My brother and I still paddle ours when we go cruising on whitewater. I had my 1991 red one on the Lower Yough and New Gorge a couple of weeks ago. I cracked two yellow cross-linked ones in the mid-80s until the red linear plastic one from 1991. It has a crack in the rear cockpit rim but is still vi...

Re: Boat of the Week - Perception Gyra Max

Taz pretty much had the falls nailed... I was regularly paddling a batmax in those days, but spent a bunch of days in a gyramax for bony rivers and flat out play... Obviously not nearly as responsive and the lack of real edges to carve on caught me a bunch - but it was a huge step up from the centau...

Re: Boat of the Week - Perception Gyra Max

The GyraMax was the first boat I owned; with it I had a creeker, river runner, and play boat all in one. :D Canoe and Kayak had a review that worried that it might be too "hot" for the beginning or average boater. While it sort of deserved its nicknames of "GyraPig" or "Oil Tanker" it was better tha...

Re: Boat of the Week - Perception Gyra Max

My father-in-law (kayaker) and Ed Caudill (C-1er) were my early paddling mentors. Ed paddled a Gyramax till he got a Magnet, but kept the Gyramax for enders in the "Pop-Up Hole" on the Saluda, which was notorious for grinding off the right side of the noses of long boats and, perhaps an apocryphal t...

Re: Boat of the Week - Perception Gyra Max

Gyramax was my first c-1. I bought it from Bob Gunst and it had some creases from when he had taken the saddle out and folded it to get it into a small plane! I almost got killed in that boat trying to surf it in the ocean. :o
