Re: shorten my paddle
As long as you can get the old t grip out, you can always put another in. I've seen people do that just so they can have a wood T grip.

Re: shorten my paddle
I have used ezwater's method to shorten paddles, bonding the T grip back in with epoxy. This typically requires that you shorten the paddle at ...

Re: shorten my paddle
I, too have gone between shorter and longer, mostly shorter. Thing is, no matter how long they are to begin with, they all get shorter - even without my intervention

Re: shorten my paddle
... over the awkwardness of the 56" but the 54" never stopped feeling too short. Just saying... I have no actual useful information on shortening a paddle

Re: shorten my paddle
Being generous, I'm 5'10". I've been moving from 58" towards 56" paddles, shorter C-1. I find the longer paddles are a bit of drag for cross-forward strokes and in low water. I've cut my shafts using a pipe cutter, so you can cut up where the grip insert is too. To clean the old shaft off the freed ...

Re: shorten my paddle
Difficulty might depend on how much you want to shorten it. If you make a guess on how far down inside the shaft the grip plug extends, you can saw through the shaft at that point. Then clean the shaft remains off the grip plug, make further decisions ...

shorten my paddle
So I purchased a Werner Natahala paddle last year. I decided that it was too long for my liking. Paddled again on the weekend and confirmed that I'd like to try and shorten it. Anyone know if this can be done? I'd like to cut the paddle and try and reinsert ...

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle
I just made a grip using a small piece of paddle shaft (cutoff from another paddle's lenght adjustment) and a piece of another paddle shaft that tapers towards the end, and actually has a slightly smaller diameter than the other shaft. Routered ...

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle
It's elm, from our yard. Hard and water resistant. Takes a lot of time, but simple cross dowels don't suit me. A proper top curve lets the hand pivot around the thumb on some cross strokes.

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle
Hardwood dowel is ok. To be OCD, you can cut the lower end at an angle to reduce the risk of a stress riser where the dowel ends. Below is another example of lengthening and adding a custom grip. The method is a bit screwy. First I epoxied dowel into the carbon shaft. The upper end of the dowel and ...

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle
Regular dowel, think it was oak. You sometimes see poplar, but I think that would be too soft.

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle
Are you using regular hardware store dowels or fancy hardwood?

Re: Shorten Iliad Paddle
Yep Scott, I did the same thing to a Mohawk paddle. Turned it into a 58'' from a 50''. Made the paddle actually nice to use.
