Re: Boat of the Week - Hydra Duet

The Duet certainly didn't handle like a good slalom C2, but it certainly handled better than a berrigan end-hole C2 :-) It was pretty stable, and was very solid for taking an inexperienced paddler down the river. It really came down to how well you outfitted your boat ...

My first C boat was a John Berry design, a C2 that I paddled with my brother Doug for several years - the 'Berrigan'. Fond memories!

I think the first c-1's and c-2's were derived from canoes that had decks added (a la Berrigan).

There's enough gray area that I don't think it's really worth arguing about.

RE: Grumman advt

... floatation; never did see milk jugs used seriously. I never owned a Grumman myself, altho I did briefly own something christened an "Open Berrigan", which was a Berrigan fitted with a "deck" with a huge single opening that actually satisfied the requirements for open canoe competition. ...

I'd be glad to build a Berrigan for you. It would cost a lot more than $50 though.

Downriver race...which boat to use...opinions wanted!

... width, and rocker than I'd like...but it was made in Riparius where the race ends, and another fellow (likely my only "competition" will be in a Berrigan) -Sage (likely the only time I'd use it in whitewater, and though it's plastic, it's long and has little rocker). There are others I've discounted ...

Thank you both for the corrections! Though I'd like to know more of what the non-Berrigan C2 is. I'll be fixing them both Friday night or Sat. (working late tonight).

Berrigan

Sorry, but the C-2 in the photo is not a Berrigan (the one in the catalog shot is). My parents owned two of them. The one in the photo resembles an old Czech maybe.

Ok, FINALLY I have all of the images and information sent in up to date...including images of the Impluse, Air, and Departure! Not to mention Berrigan, Bala, and others:). As always, we would appreciate images of boats we don't have images of yet (or better ones than what we have), as well as ...

... cockpit. By the early 70's a lot of C-2's were paddling end-hole slalom boats for river running. John described them as "pregnant surfboards". The Berrigan was faster, more directionally stable and had the center cockpit for storage (especially useful for an overniter). It never was terribly popular ...

You never know...Kaz might have the Berrigan mold still;) I don't know if he has a Hahn mold, but I know PS Composites does (link under Paddling Links). If you contact either one please ...

... I think you gotta stick right on the deck, do it real fast, and get your head out quick. I also actually used to roll a 70's model 16 foot berrigan solo from the center cockpit (made a big sprayskirt for it). That's got to be like rolling an open boat. Basically would lay way out to the ...
