Good thread

I have had the good fortune to learn from 2 of the all-time greats, with boating styles that are almost at opposite ends of the spectrum: John Kaz and Jim Michaud. Both have incredible paddling résumés and both have the same things in common- when on the river they are having more fun than anyone el...

Adding to a looong thread

In the past I boated with a club and with some groups of boaters that regularly boated together. All of these had their own culture. If you want to paddle with them you go along with the “rules” of their culture. One group I paddled with liked to drink beer on their river runs. If you want to run a ...

Team Millbrook

Breaking news!!! Team Millbrook 2011 was just announced: Sonny “Who’s Your Daddy” Huckster- always runs a clean line. Roy “Leave My Wanger Alone” McGrizzled- paddles with power, usually in the form of a beautiful woman in the bow. Casey “The Kid”- he’s got speed. Chuck “the Lightening Man”- he goes ...

So right!

The bane of my boating... where did I go wrong? When did I lose my priorities?

Good comic!

Practice

I agree with the other posts. My interpretation: - A roll that is 90 – 95% dependable in class III is still not dependable. - PRACTICE is the most powerful influence you will have on the motor learning necessary to get the roll right. I remember figuring out that the year I learned to roll I did abo...

Safety

I remember boating with a C-1er many years ago. I met him about a year after a failed rescue of a pinned paddler. Not someone from his group, it was from another group that he came upon right after the pin. For a couple of years he was pretty subdued. One day we were out and he really was grinning a...

Mistakeless?

It is not just about being able to choose a line and stay on it. Even more important is having the ability to recover when you are knocked off your line. That is what makes paddlers like Dooley, Michaud and Eli capable in the rough stuff. They go to plan 2 (or 3 or 4) and still make it look smooth.

Paddle

Keep doing what you are doing. Those maneuvers take lots of practice for strong learning of the movements. While doing it you will also get a feel for the Spark's responses- with practice you will feel when it is about to initiate a turn and you will improve your anticipation and correction. Time in...

Wow

That is some great paddling on a kick-butt course. Paddlers such as Hailey and Casey are pulling off moves that I cannot make in my dreams; AND THEY ARE YOUNGINS who will be getting a lot better. That is great for the sport.

Yep

Loss of "power" depends on the properties of the paddle. If an object flexes in response to stress it is storing the energy (i.e., less power); if it recoils effectively that energy will be returned. My interpretation of my AB paddles is that much of the flex is lost energy. That is why (1) it is ea...

Right

Yes- I cannot race in the same class twice (once with each son); another way of looking at it is that I cannot race against myself.

I think the cut-off age for juniors is 16.

Eli???

$10 for the Junior paddler in Jr/Sr? I registered my son (10 years old) for $75 and that was the only class he raced in. I also registered my 15 year old son for $75 and raced with him only in the OC-2 open 15 class (since I could not put him in the Jr/Sr). No one told me about another option... I a...

Good

I beat on my AB paddles. They are my favorite training paddle- there is some flex to the shaft, and more to the blade, which protects my shoulders and arms. Like you, I have braced the shaft off rocks and they hold up... and low water paddling (that I do not want to do with a nice Mitchell or Symmet...

Eli

My understanding is that it is $75 per entrant. That did result in an entry cost of $350.00 for my whole family. The good news is that they are enjoying the facilities at ASCI this week, so it has been worth it.
