Surprise, Surprise!
That's the original Torrent C-2 that my wife and I built in the winter of 1982-83; one of the first 3 out of the mold. The original Torrent was designed at Penn State by a team led by John Sweet specifically for C-2 Mixed teams (max. design weight was 285 lbs.). The intention was to do for C-2 what the Batmax had done for C-1. The hull was narrower than ICF regs at the time, with only the wings making it "legal." The Torrent XL that followed the following year was a wider variation designed for heavier teams. This is a lightweight (but surprisingly durable) racing layup (6 oz. glass/kevlar with vinylester resin) with a 4-layer hull and a 3-layer deck with some carbon fiber ribs and other reinforcing. I seem to recall weight when built being around 26 lbs.
As my wife and I were right at the upper limit of the design weight, we built a Torrent XL the following year and switched to that boat for its increased stability. However, the original Torrent was indeed fast and pivoted very well for the period. We subsequently, shortened the bow and stern and removed the wings, with the plan to use it for river play, but never did. I don't recall the precise cut-down dimensions, but it probably meets the shorter & narrower ICF standards introduced in 2005.
I sold the boat a couple of years ago to a father & son in Vermont who were looking to race together in the NE. While no longer a competitive boat at the national/international level, this would still perform well at intermediate level regional races, particularly for a lighter team. The boat has always been stored indoors while in my possession and was well used for one racing season but was in sound shape when sold by me (I don't know use/care since then, but I haven't seen this father/son team at any races since the sale, so its intervening use may be minimal.). I still race regularly in the Torrent XL that I built the following year; my daughter Juli and I just put in a clean run in the XL at the Tarriffville Slalom (NESS) this past weekend.
It would be nice to see this boat find a new home where it would get some use.
