Deck the hulls with scraps of fabric; Falala La La. . .

So, we all know how useful full fabric decks are on expedition canoes.

Has anyone tried a fabric-type deck on a hybrid hull like a Spanish Fly, Quake, or Aftershock?

I've seen people use a "big deck" size neo spraydeck on an esquif salsa, and a bloke (Bob of concept racing) made use of his fabrication company to make an aluminium deck with a cockpit that he riveted to his Zoom... But I'm left wondering, 'if you're doing that why not just use a C1?'

Open canoes are defined by their openess, decking them thus makes little sense to me. (Though, there are certain arguments regarding the comfort and stability of oc hulls relative to c1s and convertions, which make sense for some people.)

A legitimate question, except I have this Aftershock, see, and I really love paddling it, but it isn't the dryest boat in the quiver. . .


Now -- pdolan's contribution is most appreciated! The partial deck looks like what I'm asking about. (And the snowplow on the front has great potential for winter seal-launches.)

Hm-m, Roscoe... I have an old decked C-2 you might be interested in. It's easy to roll tandem.

We really love the Octane because its built from PE. We're on our 2nd Royalex and 1 more new on the shelf. What C2 have you got in the quiver.

Roscoe, just wondering, but could you weld a thin PE deck to the Octane and then bolt/weld some used C-1 cockpit rims to the deck.

On my Quake I welded very thin PE, (10mil), and then covered with fabric. I also welded in a flexible PE bulkhead, and joined it to the top, forming an integral air chamber, fillable through a standard air hose from an old air bag. If I did it again I would use heavier PE, and leave out the fabric.
