Older Fiberglass Boat

Post by Mr.DeadLegs »

My father has an older fiberglass boat, we are talking 40 years or so old. He wants to repair it, small cracks and such no big structural damage. Is old fiberglass repairable? It has been painted many times with epoxy paint and lived outside. Any thoughts on this? If it is repairable what materials should he look at?

He'll need some fresh 6 oz fiberglass and West 105/205 or 206; or the 16 oz bottles of G-flex. A rasp, coarse sandpaper, disposable vinyl gloves, plastic food wrap and stretchy electrical tape.

Are the cracks through the hull, or just into the exterior layers?

Just keep in mind that it if has been stored outdoors for that long, then UV will undoubtedly have had an effect on the resin, most likely making it brittle and prone to being easily damaged.
