Spring break paddling trip

Post by george77 »

I am planning a canoe trip with my 9 year old son and three other fathers and sons for spring break at the end of this month. We live in Birmingham Alabama and are planning to camp at Hiwassee on the 27th and paddle it on the 28th. Then we plan to drive to either Cartecay (if it is running), or Nantahala and camp out, and run that river on the morning of the 29th.

I have paddled the Hiwassee with my son once a year (in the summer) since he was 4 years old and we have always camped at Hiwassee Outfitters. Unfortunately their web site seems to be shut down and they are not answering the phone. Does anyone know if they are still open? Also, will the Hiwassee be releasing this time of year?

I would really appreciate opinions/suggestions for camping to paddle Hiwassee, Cartecay, and Nantahala.
Thanks in advance,
George

I live in Tellico Plains and was at the boat ramp next to Hiwassee Outfitters today. They're still there, but don't appear to be open yet. I suggest you check Gee Creek Campground (http://tnstateparks.com/parks/about/hiwassee-ocoee" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) which is also on the river and not far away. I like it better than Hiwassee Outfitters. As you may already know, it's hard to predict when TVA will release on the Hiwassee, so check the website for their next 24 hour schedule: http://www.tva.gov/lakes/aph_r.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

My favorite campground at the Nantahala is Smoky Mountain Meadows: http://www.smokymtnmeadows.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
