fiberglass fuzz

Post by Katie »

I've got two similar situations that both result in the same thing - itching!

1. We have a couple of old fiberglass canoes that get used for Boy Scout or YMCA groups; they are getting fuzzy, especially on the inside. Kneeling in the boats guarantees itchy knees for a couple of days. If you're not careful loading them, you'll get itchy shoulders, arms, etc... The Mohawk site says to sand and paint with urethane marine paint. Any opinions or alternate approaches?

2. I'm back in glass - picked up a slalom boat at the NOC's GAF. The boat is in great shape; no repairs that I can see, though there is tape (masking?!) peeling on the seams. However, the outside of the hull has a case of the fuzzies. Options? Lightly sand it and a thin coat of resin?

Thank you

Wow - that sounds almost exactly llike two posts from me within the last couple of months! And I do mean exactly, from the use of the canoes and finding the Mohawk advice to picking up a slalom boat at the GAF with some pealing masking tape!

Do a search and you should find those threads - I got some good feedback on both. I haven't gotten around to following up on either - this is the off season for the loaner canoes and I've just gotten careful handling the race boat

I see why it sounds familiar. What's up with that?

Could it be some evil kayaker plot to to get back at you by making you look like a "cross dresser" since you can't be accused of a "cross paddler" (yaker)? :o )
As for me, if I can't c-boat it, I don't go!
Or maybe your wife wants you to get on the stick and those projects done to free up the garage space!

My bet is on #2 - Look at it this way at least you know folks read your posts! 8

Katie--- The exterior fuzziness may not slow the boat. This is a popular topic for arguments. I noticed I replied to the other thread and described using a propane torch to cut back the fuzz before sanding and then rolling on resin.

You can be quite sure that exterior fuzziness is not fiberglass or carbon. These do not fuzz when they wear. Kevlar, Nylon, and polyester all fuzz.

I'm not sure what is going on - my wife didn't post, though she is familiar with the blue background that tells her I'm checking up on the c-boat world. I'm thinking it is either some script-kiddie who has figured out how to fool around with a PHP based bulletin board or this person "Katie" is for real and cut and pasted my previous post because she had the same question and was looking for additional feedback? I dunno.
