My latest video demonstrates the “new” technique that makes rolling an open canoe so much more attainable.

Hope it helps.

Re: Open canoe roll revised technique
That's how one of my paddling friends rolls his canoe. For him, it's a fast snappy roll.
Thanks for posting.

I thought everyone rolled like that. Except for the whole wait till your paddle is at the surface, then flip it part. It still amazes me how many folks wait to flip the paddle. Oh well, if it works for you, don't fix it.

Re: Open canoe roll revised technique
I've always kept the t-grip in my belly, just like Kent Ford's video. It works great in my C-1s and most open boats. Unless.... I get top heavy and don't paddle often. Or... I try my friend's Octane 85 - I can't roll that thing to save my life. [I don't count the Option and Ion another friend has that I can't roll - I can't fit in those.] I'll try that method next time.

Open canoe roll revised technique
I got a roll, when I want to , but demo-ing an Option & Octane 85 back to back defeated me this summer.
Your tips made sense to me so I'll dial them in when I get a rematch.
Learning how to roll a kayak hull this winter tuned up my lazy canoe, just good enough, hip snap. Probably relates to your lower hull/shorter radius comment.

Paddling is easy, organizing shuttles is hard.
