Self Support canoe trip on the GRAND?

Post by The.Tall.Canadian »

Hey, anyone know of if and when a grand canyon Self support Tandem canoe trip has been done? Just curious, I imagine someone has done it but wondering if there is a record of it?

Cheers

As you probably know, a number of people have done solo OC-1 self-supported runs.

I know of a group which ran three Old Town Trippers, self-supported. But, they added hard decks to the boats...making them into ginormous, crazy-heavy, un-rollable C-2s.

I have given an OC-2 run some thought. I have concluded if: (1) no decks, (2) maximum number of days allowed on a shoulder-season permit, and (3) a plan to run everything...one would need to design a boat. Or, at least, modify an existing design.

Oh yes....the old commerical-paddle-raft-line-in-an-OC2 trick. Works every time.

Hey Roy,
Thanks for the response, Do you know if the guys in the old town trippers Ran everything? any other details

Myself and a group Canadians just finished a 26 day trip in 17 foot prospectors. Fully self support.

Just trying to figure out who has been in there before in tandem tripping boats. We did have soft decks on our boats but they still took on water. :P

Thanks Caleb

Yes, they ran everything. Partly, because they did not bring the all-terrain backcountry 10-ton crane required to pick up one of those boats.

They put in somewhere way upstream...like, Glenwood Springs, CO. So, they did manage some big front-country portages.

I have to think there have been others. I mean, dudes swam the whole thing, at least once!

And, one should not forget, Kruger and Landick paddled up the grand canyon.
