Wilson Creek Trip report

Post by billcanoes »

Ouch- chased a kayak until it stopped in whole after a drop- it popped up into my ribs as I landed from the drop.

On the plus side, the river was about 3"-One awesome side surf in a whole, which I ended up in unintentionally, if only I could surf like that when I wanted to.

All in all- a fun run assuming I'm not out of commission long/

-Looking forward to Kibbler Valley Sat-

The s88t hitting the fan is where I got hurt
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bill, Rick, Cooper, Josh, Scott, Gary, Johnathon, and Robert...Wilson giveth and Wilson taketh away! Where to begin....The creek was high (Gary I don't care what the guage read it was +3). Poor Scott broke his paddle before the fun even really began on the ledge drop before 10 foot. Rick decided it would be neat to run 10 foot sideways and see how long he could be stuck in a hole. Gary had a picture perfect side surf at the bottom of triple drop (unplanned). Maytag sucked a few back in. and the best carnage came at "butt kicker"! Coop is standing on the rocks at the top of the rapid dumping his boat. Rick asks what the right boof line looks like and Coop frankly replies that he doesn't run that &*^$#. Rick shrugs it off and drops in. There is a deadening crunch as his boat slams a pillow. All we can see is the bow shoot stright up and spin 360 before it flops backwards down to the water. Coop looks at the rest of us with a horrified look in his eye as he cringes saying OH ^#%$@*. Coop literally runs down the rocks and dives head first into the rapid to pull Rick free! I've never seen anyone dive like that to help a fellow paddler. The rest of us start paddling hard down the left side to help out. Josh and I roll out trying to catch the micro eddie before the next drop as our boats make their way down the river without us. Ropes fly, people yell. All hades has broken loose. In the end Rick is OK, boats are saved and a great run was had by all!

To all you guys who paddled the gorge on Wednesday...Thanks! That was a hades of a way to make a virgin run!!!!!

Thanks Martin,

My bottom 3 ribs are sore to say the least, it hurts to stand, cough laugh, turn breath, well you get the point.

There were two yakkers who were relatively new to paddling- they should have stayed in the eddie, but its hard to do that when someone needs help, so it resulted in 3 swimmers instead of 1. Plus me and another guy had to chase the boats for about half mile, and I was a liability too after I smashed my ribs- cross bow strokes were especially brutal. All in all it was a lot of fun though. The water wasn't huge, but it was big for my ability. No swims for billy!

Wish I had been in a creeker instead of a playboat though. (we were planning on running something different)

Glad it all worked out and your pod made it out with the limited carnage!
Some days, no matter what, it's just your turn and the god hydra puts a woop'n on U!

The Other yellow Wheelboy - got one compliment from some other boaters who said the boat looked good-

They said it looked like the one they see tearing it up on the Ocoee except they could tell I was someone different. Well maybe it wasnt a compliment LOL.
