When I try the more traditional way of rolling I get this huge killer pain in my hips and have to get out. The best I can describe the pain is a cross between cramp and dislocation. It takes some time to think (or unthink)the pain away. If I focus on the pain too much afterwards it just gets worse.
With the hybrid roll the pain occures less often. I am aware this roll is bad style and bad for my shoulder but I don't get pain in my shoulders ever, just in my hips.
I have been attempting to roll canoes off and on for about 7 years and it is only in the last year that I have shown any sign of getting it.

I know this pain / cramp. I had to hang out my right foot out of the boat when it happended to me. It must have been looking very funny for the passengers and my friends ...
I friend of mine is doing the roll in a way that could be good for your problem: when he is doing the sweep from parallel to 90° at the beginning he is using the power of this "stroke" to righten up the canoe already a lot - then he is going on with the low brace.
Maybe you could get with this method your paddle more to the surface of the water for the low brace without twisting your hips to much ?
