Pennsylvania boating

Post by Jan_dettmer »

hey all,

so I am going to be in State College for a month from like the second week of March on. Is there any creeking to be done there at that time of year. I won't have a car but will try to bring a boat and stuff. I think I can prolly rent a car for a couple weekends, too.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Cheers, Jan

Jan,
great creek boating here in Northern WV, just a couple hours I think from State College. March is usually a good time to be here, although the weather has been strange this year (no snow). I live in Morgantown, WV, and I can usually boat a lot during the week, a little less during the weekends. Big Sandy and the Upper Blackwater run frequently in March, and if it rains we can get on some other smaller creeks. There's also some good big water boating on Cheat Canyon. Give me a call or email when you get here. jay

The Red Moshannon and the Black Moshannon are not to far from State College. They generally run in the spring. Stop in at Tussey Mountain Outfitters in Bellefonte, PA and they can give you the whole scoop about what's runnable and when.

state college boating

The last saturday of march every year is the RED MO downriver race, this is the 40th annual. If you're not interested in racing it's still a fun weekend of boating and a good party. If water permits, and it usually does, we usually do the BLACK MO a couple of times. The BLACK MO is a fun little class 3 creek. there's not much in the way of anything really steep or difficult in the area, that i know of, but still good fun and a great group of people. Get in contact with Ed at Tussey Mountain Outfitters 814-355-5690 he's a good guy, he'll point you in the right direction.

Hey all,

awesome, thanks so much. I am looking into getting my boat plus gear down there.
Hopefully it all works out.
Paul: thanks for the detailed info man.
Jay: I was boating with this guy in Whistler once and he told me all about the Upper Blackwater and had lots of pictures of it, too. It looked fantastic. I will try to get down there.

Cheers, Jan
