The C-Boat lose-weight diet!!

Post by msims »

Ok, this is a slightly different "trip report" than is typical on this board...No crazy waterfalls here!

I got out on the river for the first time this year...

Over the winter I put on about 10-15 lbs... hit 255 lbs.

I figured I'd be too big for the Jackson super-fun (at my skill level anyway - roll ~ 30% success)... not to mention fatter legs means feet go to sleep fast!

I rented a Zephyr (11' as opposed to 7'6" - theoretically more buoyancy).

Well, I didnt quite fit the Zephyr... factory outfitting was too small (bulkhead)... Thought I could manage... but I was about 2" off an already high seat, I ran the first swift, got abt 3 " of water in the boat, it felt like a freight train.

Had a couple friends offer up their Ocoees for me to paddle instead (they had straps) that was better from a 'butt on the seat perspective'...but I was still too heavy for the Ocoee.. 255lbs is like a 200lb paddler paddling w/ a boat full of water (or 50lbs worth anyway)

At the end of the run I was pretty discouraged... Someone tried to cheer me up, "hey maybe it's time to consider a rival? vertige" no, wrong answer.

Good news is, it's spurned me into losing weight in a 'big' way! :-)

C-1 diet

Hey Mike,
I still have my Nitro if you need a larger boat!! Sounds like with your winter you coulde be a candidate for the new Canadian "Idle".
Good luck with your pending crash diet.

lol..Idle is right.

Thanks, but no thanks... been there, done that (Nitro)... wanna get back into the c1, maybe a c1 creeker for big stuff.

How was the Uber Black? Lower Black was pretty tame, unless you chose to run the falls/slide, about 8'... Did you run Particle and Triple B falls?

I got into my brothers zepher before he started hacking on the saddle. They come outfitted with high parameters so that you will typically have to take foam off, and not add foam. At least that reason makes sense to me.
So the boat was very uncomfortable. My knees were not far out nearly enough, and the saddle was very low. This makes the boat very tippy which shouldn't be because it's a big boat (from what I'm used to).
After he cut out about a garbage bag full of foam, it's way better. Try a demo zephyr with straps. you'll get a better feel of how you could outfit yours.

Well Mike, mayba it's time to call Corran and ask him about a Critical Mass ... ...

Upper blak was a bit low for my liking. The canyons were pretty tame, as well as the 2 ledge drops, as the holes below them were tame and did not hand out any beatings to the boaters unfortunate enough to end up in them.

Triple B or Cottage or whaterver the hades people call it looked VERY rocky and nasty at this level, after seing 3 kayakers bang their way down over rocks, I decided to walk. Particle accelerator was fun, pretty forgiving even to boaters who ended up in the recirculating edddy on river right. There is no big rock hidden in the roostertail at the bottom, I checked it out ... :o ...
The Dam in Queensborough was fun, too and punishing those who had a sloppy boof stroke.

Martin's description of the run was pretty accurate. Fairly boney most walked Cottage Rapid, leaving the bottoms of their boats intact. Several did Particle including Martin, who had a sweet run. Wasn't feeling on my game so I took the dry line.
Did you run the falls/drop on the L. Black?

Don't confuse the C-Boat diet with the C-Food diet!
