I bet if if a clone was made of Alden he and his clone could do pretty well in the C-2.

Warning: Alden, if the USACK wants to meet with you about "the future of slalom"--well, I have stated their actual intentions above.

Oh, yes, and another thing about Martikan. Imagine you are good enough to win a gold at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 against people twice your age--you are sixteen years old then. You race competitively on the international circuit for the next 11 years nonstop, and win two more silver medals in the next two Olympic games, along with numerous medals in the world cup and world championship races. That is Martikan. No wonder he is so good now.

Nah, if they cloned Alden then they'd have two rightys and the C-2 would just go in circles!!!

Two things stand out about Martikan. First -- the video of Martikan right after his "bad" runs (like after his first run in the Olympic Finals in 2000, and after his first run in the '96 Olympics). Go look at those sometime.

Second -- have you guys ever seen the video of Martikan's winning run from 1996? Look at his face when he's sitting up there in the starting gate. That tells me everything I need to know right there.

On that run, his top section wasn't all that great -- he was behind on the first-half splits. But then he just POURS it on, starting with that ridiculous cross bow duck/pivot and subsequent low, dangerous ferry (which he aces), that crushing upstream on river left, that hole move in Callahan's that he flashes through in a split-second, then him destroying the ferry through Humongous, and culminating in that wonderful, desperate sprint through the dive gate and to the finish line, with those cross bows that look like they're trying to stun. By the end Martikan is throwing so much into each stroke that he almost flips going across the finish line. Go watch that sprint sometime if you haven't seen it. He won the gold by .14 seconds.

That's what I remember about Martikan.

and I would state that he lost the gold, not won the silver for the next two games...
Athens was flat out depressing.

on daily motion, there is also a video called martikan y estanguet Bratislave( I am pretty positive that the video has it spelled like that, perhaps it's european), I have to thank Ed Gordon for this one though. It just is rad to see what they are comfortable on, and what they can do.

Yeah, it's sort of amazing to realize how challenging these courses are, and how hard these guys are ripping. I remember how gripped I was above Humongous on the Ocoee in 2001, and to see what Martikan does there, knowing how I felt, puts it into a pretty humbling perspective...edg

For those of us that haven't seen it and won't conveniently get to it soon (maybe I am lazy, maybe I am at work - pick one!) - can you elaborate? Is he fired up? Icy? Having fun? Just curious.

And about the Ocoee course - I was happy to make it down unscathed the first time - Humongous went like this -

-start ferry
-flip
-roll
-over first drop
-flip
-roll
-over second drop
-flip
-roll
-start thinking about the guys paddling precisely, fast, and *upright* on that course...

Another note about that website. It seems the 5th race of the World Series is going to be held at the ASCI course next year. I personally can't wait. I hope all of the top paddlers travel to the US to race. It'll be pretty neat being able to watch Martikan race in person--assuming he would come to this race.

Hey guys....you relize that you'll to make room for the girls....as I'm sure you're aware there is a few young ladies State side paddling C1, but even up here in the Great White North, their jumping into slalom boats. Aliesha my oldest who is 13 moved from OC1 to C1 this year as her new Lizard 350 came in. Emily her younger sister who is 11 is waiting for her new Lizard to come in at the end of this month. This is so cool seeing these young ladies rip up the rivers...... :D If you don't see Aliesha down at Charlotte this year you'll see her next, she will make her daybue at the Canadian Nationals this year. Just a proud dad!!! :P

It used to drive me nuts when I was racing, that all of the courses were set up to favor the lefties  - Especially when Jon and Davey were in the race...

But seriously - I haven't been able to put a finger on it, but there has to be some force of nature that gives an advantage to the lefties.

Martikan has some pretty incredible moves - but I do think his body size plays a big part.

Martikan and the Hochschorners use Vajda paddles. I assume they paint them themselves, though. Apparently Vajda makes paddles for athletes they sponsor, but which are not available to the public.

I think Isaac painted one of his paddles white--so I suppose he knows a good paint to use--one that won't just flake and look bad.
I am tempted to paint my new paddle some interesting color. I'm picturing a blade painted like this: http://www.tiedyequeen.com/images/axl15.gif
But then again, carbon black isn't bad...
