Jesse Sharp

Post by sbroam »

There have been a number of posts recently on BoaterTalk about Jesse Sharp and a few of you (I did) may have received an e-mail about his attempt on Niagra Falls. One of the links has some pictures I don't remember seeing before of him as he approached and went over the lip (http://www.nfpl.library.on.ca/sharp.html).

Someone over on BT asked "what is that thing on his boat?", referring to the spare paddle in the picture in the lower right of the set linkd above ( http://www.nfpl.library.on.ca/sharpkayak.jpg) - well, clearly it is a spare paddle. But look a little closer - save the picture and zoom in, maybe play with the balance (i.e. increase brightness) - and what is it held on with? A penny loafer?

Jesse Sharp was a C-boater??!?!?! Whoa! -giggle- I think it would provoke a couple things if Yakkers found this out. 1. They'd have a newfound respect for cboaters.. or 2. They'd be able to explain his insanity! ;-)

For those of you who haven't read the boatertalk posts, they go something like this..

"here, look at these photos..."
-> "whoa, that dude's my hero.."
->"he's irresponsible, no pfd, helmet.."
->"yo brother, like OMG he's like my hero"
->"read this lecture on saftey...Jesse's no hero"
->"amen, I've been KAYAKING for 20 years, he's dumb..."

That about sums up the posts.

I'd be interested to see the video, apparently it was on the news when it happenned. Doesnt seem to be online anywhere.

i thought yall open boaters would appreciate this little niagara story . . .

back in 87', due to some legal work, there were three legal trips down the niagara gorge (below the falls, but some of the biggest water on the planet!!!)

on one of the trips a particular boater (a kayaker no less!) was so worried about blowing his skirt in the huge waves that he actually glued it to the rim!!

what is funny is that then Nolan Whitesell then ran the Gorge cleanly in his OC-1!!

I bet Nolan ran it clean...I saw him on the Russell Fork a few weekends ago in an OC2 with his wife I believe and he had cleaner lines than anyone else I saw at Triple Drop. I was thoroughly impressed. He's an amazing boater.
