The Ledges
There is a play spot on the French Broad near Asheville called the ledges. Check out FB section 6 on the AW river database for NC.
It's a Howler!

Tuck Ledges: one more remote possibility
The two previous posts discuss spots that are much more likely to be what you were seeking. Here is another possibility, albeit remote. 2 or 3 miles up Highway 107 past Cullowhee/past where the road turns from 4 lane to 2 lane (as you are headed from Sylva towards Cashiers), Jackson County has a river access park called the East LaPorte River Access Park. Information about the park from the Jackson County web site is pasted in below. If you paddle downstream from the park a short distance, the river makes a sharp left hand bend and goes over a fairly long series of ledges (200-300 yards, maybe). My vague recollection, however, is that the play is not great and that it is awfully hard to paddle back up. Keep in mind, however, that it has been close to 20 years since I have even been there!! Good luck!
