Larry did his runs back in November. There's more water now, but too much ice.

Good one, Craig! I'll think of that with every shovelful of the evil stuff.

We got out last Monday morning on the Quin (Holden, MA), right before it turned so cold and snowy. At least we got a December run in!

No problems boating year-round in southern, coastal BC.

4 open boats paddled the local run today.

Pat, what's running in Coastal BC right now? Still got a few days off until classes start again and would like to boat for a couple of days.

Cheers!

Smith drainage in cali was great last week. It went from 3k to 60k overnight so there was one day there that we couldn't boat, but after it settled down for a day it was big fun.

Gonzo,

Most of my winter paddling is limited to the North Shore here in Vancouver, just beacause it's too cold to go too far. Yesterday you could've had the choice of 4 runs: Upper Seymour (beautiful wildernessy class II-III), Lower Seymour (common local run, class II, but with lots of play), Capilano (other common local run, class III), and Coquitlam (class III, and not run that often because levels are quite finicky). There's some info & photos of these runs on the Picasa link below.

The Chilliwack (class II-IV) is also often run in the winter, but mostly by kayakers in the valley and not so much by Vancourites, at least not the canoeists I know.

The Cap is good at about 3-4 on this gauge:

The Chilliwack (Sleese to Pointa Vista) is good around 20-50 m3/s on the 'Chilliwack below Sleese' gauge. I've yet to run the Cilliwack canyon above there (class IV), but it would be OK at the lower range of flow.

Could be worth the trip to paddle the Chilliwack! Unfortunately the levels can rise or drop really quickly depending on freezing levels and storms. Looks OK for now though.

There's also Lynn Creek on the North Shore, it's suppossed to be an awesome class IV run, but I haven't done it, it's had major wood problems for a season or 2.

More info on the canoeing in the lower mainland here and here:

And from the kayakers here:

If you come down to paddle, post on that new local canoeing forum and maybe somebody will join you (you could also probably find canoes going to the pool in Kamloops?)

Cheers, Pat.

p.s. Temps in Vancouver have are in "the 40s" this week. It was +9C (48) and almost sunny when we paddled yesterday.
