Unskilled and unaware of it: How difficulties in recognizing one's own incompetence lead to inflated self-assessments.
Kruger, Justin; Dunning, David
From: Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Vol 77(6), Dec 1999, 1121-1134.
and: Wikipedia, Dunning–Kruger effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which "people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it".[1] The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their own ability as above average, much higher than in actuality; by contrast, the highly skilled underrate their abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. This leads to a perverse result where less competent people will rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may weaken self-confidence because competent individuals falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. "Thus, the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others."[1]

Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two different things, but yes all the advice here should be taken with a grain of salt but hey there are many ideas for people to go and try now see what actually does work for them.

Well after reading all four pages, I think I'm going to have to learn to surf offside with a high brace. I have surfed shallow holes of side with the onside low brace but my technique is a little different than what I saw in the first video. I usually park my blade under the chine tilted up so that it is serving more as and extension of the boat. From that position I can back the boat out. This would not work on a steep pore over. I think the bathtub boy video has some offside high brace surfing in it. But, I think that we can research both techniques at the lunch hole on the NB of the Potomac. I have surfed that briefly with the paddle on the upstream side as I described.

I was on some good sized surfin holes today. I found that the less steep the hole, the better it is for a low brace.
The low brace is rather effective, when surfing on your onside, to a straight surf, to an offside. Then using a strong J-lean, you can lay off the low brace, and switch to a high brace, bringing you to a back surf. I did that fairly consistently today, for the first time. And I feel pretty comfortable doing it. Today was my best day so far in terms of purposefully pulling off 360s.... I wasn't comfortable enough to do them over and over though. Just one and get out. Try again...see if that wasn't an accident.
If the hole is steep...Stick away from the low brace. use the high brace, and lean like hades. Although It doesn't matter because you're going to have a hard time getting out steep holes most likely. I find that these will consistently hold you, as opposed to a less steep hole.
These are some things I learned today. Do others agree?

yes you can mess around more in a less steep hole and you can keep the hole flatter allowing for easier balance, but in a very steep pourover you have to lean downstream quite a bit so the low brace is out, but you can work out of them don't just sit on a offside brace cause that will just make you tired really fast and get you nowhere. Try to use offside strokes to get you to the corner of the hole and brace when you need to. you can kind of do offside forward strokes that are kind of braces at the same time.
Now if you are offside surfing in a steep hole and the corner you want to go to is behind you I have never really figured out what to do in this situation besides try to spin, ender, reach for green water or swim. What would yall do in this situation?
Best thing to do is practice and see what works and it sounds like you are doing that!!!
