Any C boaters around the WRJ VT/Hanover NH area?

Any C boaters around the WRJ VT/Hanover NH area?

Post by joshH »

So I moved up here this summer from South Carolina. I'm Scott Broam's buddy if any of you have met me at an Armada or a Louie lou. I need to meet up with some paddlers up here and learn the rivers. I admit to still being geographically challenged around here.

I am dying to go paddling. I am available this weekend.

Hi Josh! I hope things are working out well for you (at Dartmouth Hitchcock as I recall?)

I'm about 2.5 hours west of you (Glens Falls), but not much is running right now other than the Hudson Gorge (an hour north) or the Sacandaga (20 min west, but not worth driving for really, unless you are desperate and just want to play with boats (I may have a shortage of time, but not boats!).

Locally check out the northeast paddlers message board ( npmb.com ). there is a wave on the Conn. river just south of town you should check out (I found out about it just after I moved out of the area (I lived in Bradford VT, just to the north for a bit), and wished I'd heard about it earlier!). Mitchell Paddles is close by in Canaan, in case you are looking for a stick. There are quite a number of local runs, but you're best bet is to post to the npmb.com and try and hook up with the current locals.

If you have time to come west to the Adirondacks to boat or ski let me know. Unfortunately my weekends are tied up for a bit, but we'll figure something out.

Welcome to the Northeast! Folks may stick to themselves, but you'll find almost anyone (local) will help you out if you are in a jam. And unlike the south, folks don't tend to shoot at you if you're boating

Hey Adam

Yeah I'm at the Hitch.

I will be in touch both for paddling and skiing. Fortunately, a couple of my work mates are serious skiers who are going to get me off to a good start on that. I will get some of the beginner worn off on the local trails and I will come visit. I haven't bought skis yet. My wife did get me some snowshoes.

I just posted on the NEPMB tonight for the first time. I met one of the administrators Wayne at the deerfield when I went down there to sell the yellow atom. Nice guy.

Shooting? I've only been shot at once on the river. This guy was actually sighting in his black powder deer rifle right next to the river. I didn't see him till it went off. I about messed my pants. I crawled up the bank and announced my presence (as I had to get out of the river there as it was rising and I was flyfishing) and he invited me up to talk.

Well then there was that time on the French Broad section 10 in the middle of winter with my wife. We heard what sounded like a shoot out. There were these four guys firing as fast as they could at some target in the woods as fast as they could reload. Now those guys freaked me out. I was waiting for pop shot across the river.

Up here I just spent a month in the Emergency Dept. and not a single gun shot or knife wound. Everybody up here just falls off of stuff: Tractors, bikes, or horses. There just not fun.

Hey I just saw your post. I'm originally from NH, however, I'm only a 2nd year boater and I've lived in PA for the past 4 years so I know literally no water in NH. I have been checking AW for NH's rivers and the Winnapasaukee River is my go-to spot when I head up there this October 8-10th for a childhood friend's wedding. We used to vacation on Lake Winnapasaukee and I never knew there was a river. It's a class III+-V with some nice stuff on it. I've chatted online with some canoe-clubbers from that area and asked if they'd be interested in a trip that weekend, water provided of course. They basically said that's way too far off to plan out but to hit them up when I come up. If you want, I can get your e-mail and I'll CC you on all correspondence with them.

If anything, we can have an awesome trip when I come up and you can meet some local boaters. Send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll try to put you in touch with them in the meantime.

Check out the Dryway on the Deerfield. Just about the only sure Class III-IV run going right now with the recent spate of dry weather. Next release is Sunday August 22. This is the release schedule: http://www.h2oline.com/2010DeerfieldCalendar.pdf

There is usually a bunch of folks who post on npmb.com that paddle the Dryway when ever it is running. I'd be up for it this weekend but my feeble skills aren't ready to challenge the Dryway, so I'll be on the next section down (Fife) that day.

And when it comes time to ski, check out Mad River Glen and Magic Mountain.

Hey jatakasawa. I'll PM you shortly with my email.

Craig, yeah keep me in mind.

Brewbeer. I might see you at the deerfield on Sunday. My wife maybe interested in going if that is the case we would paddle fife. I would be open to paddle either. Just wanting to start making connections. I will let you know what we decide to do.

Thanks everyone. JoshH
