I only have citrus coloured boats Kaynoes, because there are enough second hand butt boats going around for me to be choosy about them; My canoes however are a relatively rare commodity, so whichever boat is cheapest is the boat I've bought.

If I could afford to buy new I'd aim to have all of my boats Lime Green, Lemon Yellow or Orange.
All of my winter boating kit is Yellow and Lime too, but that happened entirely by accident (IR had a yellow suit in my size they let me have for £200, My Ronin was available in gold now or black in two months, and when Joel built my deck I asked for "a bright colour" and got electric green.)

Did I mention I have a small-child-like affinity for bright colours and shiny objects (especially glittery shiny objects).

I have never bought or not bought a boat due to color. However, when looking at pictures, my blue & white cascade looks really good. So, I guess it matters in that respect.

Color

Post by Bill M »

I try for bright colors, for visibility etc. Since when I'm in the boat I can't see to much of the outside hull it doesn't make a lot of difference. Get air bags in your favorite color and relax.
Pink Encores were cool!

I encountered a similar problem when I did the Blackfly. The nice thing is that since it was my boat, I got the color I wanted (sorry Smurf). Or I sort of got the color I wanted. I wanted "orange" but it was a 5400lbs minimum on "orange" plastic, but they could get one box (900lbs :o) of "mango." Next time around I'll try for a different color.

we ran as many boats (27) as we could with that. I think I have something like 16lbs left over. Not sure what the next color will be.

We've already been over the color preferences once... http://www.cboats.net/cforum/viewtopic.php?t=7960440

But do we really all want to be paddling red boats???

I'm of the who really cares the color school.

If I have a choice, I'll take whatever color others aren't paddling. Makes it easier to find my boat in a crowd.

I've had boats custom built in unique colors, it wasn't the color as such that I cared about, just being a little different.

My Gaia Everlast bags are bright yellow. PFD is mango. My heavy duty drysuit is yellow. Helmet yellow. Visibility problem solved.

My truck is white, didn't care about the color as such, just didn't want something dark that gets super-hot in summer. Brown may have been better since I'm too lazy to wash it, but white was in stock so we're good.

If you're staring at the color of your boat, you have issues. Either the water you're paddling is boring, the scenery sucks, or you need to get the dam thing off your roofrack and get it wet. When I'm in my open boats I have no clue what color they are 'cause all I see are the floatbags, and waves.

I find that to promote the sport you really need to get some good video and photos of some bad-butt running the class V gnar.

So you really need to consider colours that look good in the videos to really maximize the contrast and effect and all that; which is really weather and lighting dependent so you need a full array of boats of varying colours to really be bad butt and you know advance the sport and get others to be really like "wow man, you can do that in a canoe"

One colour that I have found that doesnt really work is white...it tends to blend into the gnar and the dude just looks like he's sitting on top of the foam pile... but then maybe that could be a good effect too.... so who's to say really...

Eric - I had a brown truck. It always looked dirty...

Also, having boats all the same color makes it easier to sneak a new one into the "fleet"b

Color really doesn't bother me. I had the pink Encore. I try not to own too many red things, lest I be confused for a UGA fan, but I am paddling my L'Edge.

Craig knows where I stand - lime green is the color I want!

Don't forget to make sure your floatbags are a different (but complementary) color from you boat. Otherwise, to the untrained eye, it might look like you're paddling a kayak.
