wood gunnels

Post by riverharlot »

I have an older mad river outrage with very nice wood gunnels. The person who had the boat before me kept them in great condtition. Whats the best stuff to treat them with?

And how often? I've heard 3-4 x a year. I have it stored someplace dry and out of the weather but its on water at least once a week or more year round.

I use boiled linseed oil cut with varsol approximately 50/50. I've tried tung oil too but this works best for me. I apply about twice per year two thin coats each time.

Thompson's Waterseal. Match the stain. I use Nutmeg Brown, but the wood gunwales are pretty dark.

If you use boiled linseed oil, be careful - rags with this stuff on it can spontaneously combust.

apply oil with a rag-i've seen canoes with drips all down the sides from applying with a brush.

i've been using watco rejuvenating oil, works just fine.

only takes a few minutes to do the whole thing, so just re-apply from time to time as needed. i think i've done mine twice this past summer.
