May 22-23 Armada

Post by sbroam »

I thought it was time that this armada got it's own thread! My plan is to head up sometime Thursday to Richmond to paddle the James on Friday with KNeal and Mike Watson, then head over to the NBP to paddle it on Saturday. Depending on when I need to be back in SC, I may paddle something on Sunday, too.

Boats I can bring : Rockit conversion, Score conversion, Slasher(aka Squasher).

Chime in if you are coming!

We'll C!

Post by Sir Adam »

I'm hoping to make it right now, and plan on brining my Viper and Master-cut Acrobat. If anyone wants to try anything in particular let me know, I'll try and drag it down as well 8) . I was hoping to have a Maven for folks to demo, but I still have A LOT of sanding and filling to do on the plug. The Hull is looking pretty sweet (as NZMatt can attest), but the deck is still being worked out. Hopefully the week after this I'll be closer to pulling a mold off it....

Anyway, some of the "interesting" boats I could bring down:
-Standard cut Acrobat
-Edge
-Groove
-Oxygen (though I doubt anyone would want to paddle it on anything but a lake!)
-Fanatic II
-Tomahawk C2
-Blackwater
-Magnet
Keep the C!

I'll be there. I'll be late getting on the river, never put on before noon. I will be hanging around the following week camping in Dolly-Sods or else-where. Walt and I may be paddling the ArgueMax so the Viper and Atom May be available .
till next

Friday on the James? Count me in!
Saturday NBP? Count me in!
Something real quick early Sunday? Count me in for that too!
Scott, I want to try your Score.
I can bring:
Viper - full cut
Big EZ
Amp
Acrobat - 1/2" cut (I may not get the outfitting finished on this one so I'm not sure I'll bring it)

Mike, bring that Acrobat, I want to try it out. I will bring some foam and duct tape. You just can't put in till afternoon. I'm on Garret County time which is after breakfast, after cruise, and after jawing with the parking attendant.

till next

AWA link for the NBP : http://www.americanwhitewater.org/rivers/id/2430/

Camping in the past has been along the Savage - any idea if that will be crowded since we're hitting it later in the season? Do we need a back up plan?

I definitely will come up for the NBP stuff on the weekend. I could do Richmond on Friday if the put on wasn't till noonish or so. Either way, I need some help with driving directions to the NBP assembly/camping spots. Boats: hornet, cascade, Wave Sport X, Skeeter. Ocoee. Jack

the where of it

There are others who can tell you more about getting there than I. The last two times, I followed somebody in, though I did manage to find my way out on my own.

If you click on the link below, the map will be centered on Bloomington - zoom all the way in and you get the street details. A convenient place to meet has been the parking lot in front of a brick building near the fork of 135 and Raley Ave (if memory is serving), the take out is across 135, off of Potomac Ave (?). The put in, well, it is up hill past a Kingsford Charcoal plant - I could find it but not give directions! Camping would be up Savage River Rd. Mapquest will give you directions that are fairly detailed, but still best checked against a map.

Hopefully I can join you guys as long as you don't mind paddling with an open boat. I'll bring along my H3 255 if anyone wants to try it out. I spoke with a friend of mine from Keyser last night and he said there was a real nice campground on the other side of the dam on the Savage that not many people go to, so that may be an option if there isn't enough camping space. Hopefully I'll be leaving fri around 5:00 from Stafford and probably comming back sat maybe sun if anybody wants to carpool, I have a pickup with a rack so there's plenty of room for boats. Hope to finally get to meet some of you guys.

what ya'll are bringing

Post by sbroam »

I've been thinking it would be fun to try a proper OC-1 slalom boat, something a bit lighter than that 70# Wenonah Edge I once owned. Anybody likely to bring one? mshelton, that H3 sounds interesting, too. Why would we mind paddling with an open boater? It's those kayakers you have to watch out for...

The boats I can bring are listed above. Other scarce items I can bring are :

Blenheim's real ginger ale - this stuff has HEAT to it
Barbecue sauce - our local BBQ is mustard based, not common and some folks really like it

'Q

Post by Mike W. »

Hey Scott, bring some of that 'Q sauce for me. I'll pay you for it. That stuff sounds interesting :) !

Jim, I glassed in the thigh-strap anchor tonight. If it holds  , I'll bring the Acrobat for you to try. The water has been high here since I got the boat & I haven't been able to try in on anything more than an eddyline. I plan to paddle my Viper :D .

If anyone wants to paddle the Amp or Big EZ, let me know & I'll toss 'em in the truck.

Mmmm. I'll vouch for that bbq sauce. Even though it's a mustard, it doesn't taste that way--just plain good ol' southern sauce from South Carolina :) .

So far, I have Scott, Mike, and some guy named "Jack" planning on paddling the James on that Friday. And yes, we can plan on starting around noonish. So far, the James is approaching its normal summertime low flow. Still paddleable, just plan on using plastic because of rocks. Pipeline should be a good level for playboating moves. For those joining me, plan on seeing as much of the rapid features the downtown James has to offer (which will include hauling the boat around).

Scott and Mike, let me know if you want accomodations for Thursday/Friday night at our place. Plenty of room, we just need to have the rooms organized. And, Scott, the sauce is plenty payment if you bring any :D .
