Esopus Slalom - October 1st & 2nd - Phoenicia, NY

Post by doomroller »

The Esopus Slalom will be held on October 1st & 2nd.

This is a Class III slalom race on Esopus Creek in Phoenicia, NY.

Cabins and car camping are available right at the race site and plenty of camping is just down the road. More info can be found @ http://aca.whitewater-slalom.us/a-esop-r.htm

This is a two-day race (1 run each day) so everyone can get on the road at a reasonable hour on Sunday.

Beautiful foliage in the Catskills for this race and lots of creeks if it rains.

Moved to sticky since folks seem to have an interest in races now.

Hope it continues... need more racers out there to support the events and keep them happening!

The Esopus peaked at 23.34' (80,000 CFS) on the USGS gage at Coldbrook, yesterday 8/28. The record level was 21.9, Major flood level is 18'.
I expect that there will be significant changes to the run from The Portal to Boiceville.

I hear a few of the bridges accessing the region are washed away.

I live in upstate New York, and if Binghamton is any barometer of how bad the Catskills are (they are pretty close in terms of the damage) then its anybody's guess. The Southern Tier and the Catskills had all time record flooding. I canoed through the city of Binghamton. You're probably going to want to check and see if the race (and the river) is still there.

I noticed in last year's results that Kaz was one of the fastest racers and posted his fastest time in the OC-short boat class. :D

I also noticed the name of a Natalie Thomas who raced in the K1-master class. What is up with THAT!?

Al, I'd say it was Class Ebola with all of the sewage that dumped in.

Kneal,

You forgot to mention that my name also appeared in the OC2Mixed class! If I'm gonna drive 8+ hrs to a race I have to get my $$$ worth so I occasionally race K1W.

Oh, I saw those results too, and it looked to be a good performance! However, to forget is to accidentally omit. I did that on purpose.

8 hours drive? That would be about the same time for me from Richmond. :-? I would love to come up and race it, but I'm in the middle of cross-country season so have a blast y'all.
