I have been paddling a Mohawk Rodeo for a couple of years and have really enjoyed it. However, I have always envied you C1'ers and how you did not have to empty your boats after playing in a hole or rolling. In addition, a lot of the time I felt like I was getting pushed around due to the size of the boat (and sometimes the water in it) and often had a tough time getting to where I wanted to go.
SO, I have had this thought in the back of my mind that what I really needed was a C1. No more paddling to the side of the river to dump, and no more waiting for my kayaking buddies as they played in holes that my Rodeo didn't get much out of. Of course I realize that I have a ways to go in proficiency and am not looking to a C1 as a remedy to poor paddling. Did I mention I always wanted to have a legitimate reason to wear a skirt? (Just kidding)
Anyway, I am considering purchasing a friends Liquid Logic GUS that is already set up as a C1 and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this boat as a C1. I am a big guy weighing in at 210 and so a big boat such as the GUS might be appropriate. While I do enjoy playing in holes and surfing, I am also interested in becoming a better river runner and catching the little eddies here and there. I thought this might be a good boat for that too.
I have only had the chance to lake paddle it a couple of times and I have to say that I was a little surprised when I couldn't walk when I got out of it, but I read the ankle post and my hopes are high that this can be fixed.

Gus is a big boat, even for a big guy

if the price is right, then perhaps the gus is the way to go, but I think you'll find it a big boat as a C1.
If you've been paddling a mohawk rodeo as an open boat, you're probably already used to small boats (as open canoes go anyways) - I really wouldn't be afraid to try to get into something with a bit more play potential... the Gus will really keep you on the surface of the water, and not allow you to do some of the things you might want to do as you progress. Also, I'm pretty sure the gus is a displacement hull - good for creek runs and big water, but you'll be cursing it when you try to surf. If you're into a big boat, and want something that's a solid, bona fide river runner, maybe look at the LL Hoss - it's got the volume up front of a creeker, but has a playboat hull, and less volume in the stern to allow for squirts, etc.
you might also want to look at the Jackson Super Fun. apparently it's an awesome boat for big guys - lots of play, but also a great river runner.
