GoPro Hero3

Post by Trex »

FYI: In case anyone is about to pull the trigger on a GoPro it looks like they are about to release the Hero3 line.
Could mean some deals coming up on the older Hero2 model.

Sony is also releasing what looks like a good GoPro competitor also, worth looking at I think.

The new gopro is indeed pretty sweet, but one thing that is missing in all of these conversations is how your editing sweet and online compression for Vimeo/Youtube will degrade the image.

Entry level film editors will not give you the quality needed to maximize the Hero3's resolution and frame rate. And even if you're editing in FCP or Premiere, if you're putting your video up on Vimeo or Youtube, even at the highest HD settings you still won't see the crystal clear quality of the original image. So unless you're going to invest in a 700 dollar editor and then burn to BluRay, don't get too worked up if you can only afford a Hero 2 or the Silver model Hero3.

I will say, the quality of the videos being uploaded nowadays are pretty awesome. Between Wayner's Creek and Destroy, MarkZak's films, Tommy's videos, it's a good time to be addicted to canoe porn. And the fact that you can take a small waterproof camera anywhere you want is definitely a big reason behind the increase in film quality.

I'll go for it for no other reason than 120 frames a second vs 60, thats worth the bump from a $300 to a $400 unit and the wifi connect to your smart phone to work on image framing live....pretty sick. There is no reason you can't serve up the highest quality video on the web. There is an assumption that you can't or won't serve up video on a better video server available tomorrow that will blow you away. just my way of seeing it.

True, perhaps I'm just grumbling because they released this four months after I bought my Hero2
