This technique was suggested to me by an MKC instructor. It seems counter-intuitive, since we are generally taught to heel the boat in the direction of a turn. But it works!Jim Michaud wrote:Here's what works for me while surfing. When the canoe starts to turn to my on-side I lean the boat hard towards my on-side, almost putting the gunwale into the water. This almost always causes the canoe to curve back towards my off-side.
I've never taken any canoeing courses so I don't know if this is an approved technique. I found this out by experimentation and I'm not going to argue with success.

good advice from all
i would recommend practicing surfing a small waves, one's that will
barely hold you, the one's that no one else is in line for
you will be able to do everything (especially in a fly) without the
power of the wave...just don't use power to accomplish the move
... a lean to the offside, with a forward sweep, with a crossdraw,
with a shudder rudder,etc....a lean to the other-side, ... pry's done
off of the gunwales... and so on
my quess is it's in the lean, use your edges...small waves and little
changes in the edges ought to teach you exactly where they are
how to use to your advantage ... just use as little power as needed
...or better use no power, just leans with or without bracing
like everything else, there's usually more than one way to do
something
