For the past 6 years I've used various cameras and will stay using a diving case. The Optio and Olympys WP series are great for quick pocket shots, but for general use I prefer a Canon 710IS (now 720IS) with diving case.

The 6x zoom lets me get shots I'd otherwise never get close enough for.

The optical image stabilizer keeps the jiggies at bay

The diving case keeps the camera instantly accessible, no fumbling with a dry box hoping I have the camera in time for the shot.

AA batteries!

As for comments about water droplets on the diving case lens, a lens cap solves that beautifully. I made one from foam that's just tethered to the case. Some photos can be found on my P-Net page (paddling.net) http://www.canoecolorado.com/PNet

But for a small waterproof camera that fits in the PFD, the Optio or the Olympus work well. Saw the latest Olympus for $290 at Target a few weeks back. Marek uses the Optio for most of his shots, his site being http://www.fit2paddle.com (ya it's kayaking, but half the site is paddling photography tips).

I use my Pentax K10D

Post by cmnypny »

and carry it around in a Pelican case with extra lenses.

It has a full aluminum body and is also fairly weather resistant.

I have taken pictures when my hands are sopping wet and it still has a great grip.

I have taken pictures at -10 degrees celsius.

I have taken over 19,000 frames since I bought it in march 2007.

Here are some of my pics:

Here are the specs on the camera:

I have a Pentax Optio W30 and primarily use it for video. It takes great pictures and all but you can't beat a SLR.

The K10D is on my wish list - can you use the display as a view finder when shooting?

Take a look at the Sanyo Xacti Digital Camcorder. It is waterproof, 6.0 Megapixel - Takes both Stills and video.

I've had mine on the water a fair amount - and underwater too - No complaints yet...

Pentax Optio W30

Post by onepaddlejunkie »

I have owned two Pentax Optio W30s. They make a fine fish sinker. The fact that they fill with water makes them even better sinkers. Hunk of junk IMHO. I am not sure what I will be buying next, but It will have a viewfinder and use AAs or AAAs.
