A few years ago I borrowed PAC's Viper at the lunch hole on the NB. He had an 8" saddle and I'm 6'4 so I was never in the boat even while I surfed but after I washed off I flipped and the skirt popped I rolled anyway. So being in the boat isn't always a factor.
