Anyone use all of these pry's on a regular basis?

The shorter the boat the more the pry at the end of the forward stroke helps to keep the bow from deflecting to my off side. So I probably use the pry nearly as much as the forward stroke since it is part of it.
I do that all the time from a standstill, then transition to a J stroke because it feels smoother to me - the correction of the pry is definitely more powerful. [Strongly correcting with a J can be awkward even for the very flexible.] Of course, mixing it up with crossforwards works, too - I'm glad there is more than one way to skin these cats...

When the RapidMediaTVGuy posts, I'm not surprised that his link is to a Rapid Media website, even one behind an e-mail wall. Since Rapid Media is an advertiser on CBoats, I think of it as a reasonable price to have this website available to me for free.

YMMV, Just my $0.02, etc...

Larry, You need a - junk email account... ((You can get one for free.))

Only real friends and actual work, ever gets the real personal account. You go there every 3-4 weeks to empty junk mail filter, so you can keep forever. Works great for all those political petitions, help the wildlife groups, or other semi-desirable account ask4'ers.

Except for CBoats - Of course!

I think the pry is a good discussion nonetheless...

My comments come strictly from a class III+ viewpoint...

and yah eddyhops - you can pry anywhere you feel like around the boat and call it whatever you want... but its generally a 'stern pry' or a righting pry... me? i just air brace and roll, much more instinctual.

As for prying in anything above class III+ ? - I just don't do it. its not worth the risk of jaming ur paddle, and its not near as effective as other strokes IN MY OPINION.

I pry alllll the time. Bow pry, stern pry, offside stern pry, and Draws of course. but the only time my paddle is in possition for an offside bow pry, or draw, is when I'm about to roll.

Lately I've been working on underwater paddle recoveries, by just slicing the paddle through the water without taking the blade out of the water and the pry is used very heavily. I can navigate though rapids without taking the blade out of the water, unless I need a cross bow.

      My kun fu grows strong.

iRolled do you ever use a sculling pry? I find on flatwater I use it a little bit but never even think about it in whitewater. It seems I immediately crossover and draw instead. Just feels more natural (or maybe easier) to me. I wonder what is more effective though? I'm all about always having a blade in the water as without it the river is in control so maybe I should be working that pry a bit more.

I sometimes use the sculling pry in eddies to line up with where I want to start accelerating.

I like to occasionally toss a shudder rudder into the mix when I'm surfing a big wave... does that count as a pry?

What does it mean when you really don't think about what you are doing out on the water or what the names of the actions you are doing are called but it all seems to somehow work? Cuz... I think I'm that guy... :P
