I'm very much right-handed so I paddle on the left, controlling the paddle with the T-grip. If I paddle on the right I end up controlling the paddle by the shaft which prevents me from doing efficient cross strokes. I don't have much of a problem paddling on the right while paddling tandem canoes in the stern because I don't have to do cross strokes.

I too am right-handed but paddle on the left. I started tandem and the guy who owned the boat paddled stern right. Never switched when I went to solo.
