Glimpse of the Saluda
by Scott B.
Many of you have heard me rattle on about the Saluda, in person, on this forum, or in e-mails. We recently had a high release in conjunction with a fund raiser for a local non-profit (Canoeing for Kids - www.canoeingforkids.net). I shot a couple of rolls of film that day and have recently posted them on the web so folks on the trips could download them - thus they are pretty high resolution and slow to load. You will, unfortunately, notice NO c-boats pictured. I was the only one... I offer these as an example of what the Saluda can be like; these are between 11,000 and 13,000 CFS out of a possible 18,000 +/- CFS.

Wooo hooo!

Looks FUN Scott! Although sometimes I wonder about boating in water that looks surprisingly like chocolate milk:)

Mind you, all the kayakists do need re-education....

C-ya!

Water Quality
by Scott B.
It's normally a very clear river, the silt and such settle out in the reservoir behind the dam. [It supports a trout population, but is not quite cold enough, enough of the time for them to reproduce consistently] That morning we had had torrential thunderstorms with accompanying flash flood warnings - our first trip at 1:00 pm was pretty muddy from the runoff from tributary creeks and we had to keep an eye out for floating strainers (a few 12"+ diameter logs, > 20' long). Also, I saw at least 100 tennis balls from a racquet club upstream... By the time of our 4:00 trip, things were back to normal as the release from the dam flushed the "chocolatey" water out.
