creek boats and displacement hulls
by dick
what do people think about displacement hulls. i want to do more creeking and i want the volume and blunt ends of a creek boat. i'm looking at an embudo(prijon). it looks really good, but what about displacement hulls? it's not a super round hull, but it isn't a planning hull. i think a "modified" displacement hull will really soften landings. but what about stability? any imput?
thanks

I'd stay away from a displacement hull

I've paddled a Cascade on a few creeks here and there, and find that while the stability is great, with no edges you rely a lot more on the paddle to get you where you need to be. For a while this didn't bother me, but having now spent time in an X as well as an Ocoee, I'd much rather paddle a hard chined boat. With a little edge the river is just more fun, and a bit of lean can really help catching eddies, ferrying, etc. Hope this helps.

just an opinion

Both designs have their place. Like any design there is a trade off.
The planing hull is much more stable and easier to accelerate, but the chines like to catch on rock.
The displacement hull will land softer off big drops and not snag on rocks, but it is sluggish and less stable for c-1.
I paddle an h2 with the chines rounded off and I like the boat alot.
Bottom line to every deal is paddle before you buy.

displacement hulls and stability

when people say flat bottom boats are more stable, they mean initially stable. displacement hulls have a far greater secondary stablity. very good for side surfing and eddy grabbing and vicious current ect. ect. softer landings; way. for narrow, steep, rocky creeks that are really movin. they are the best way to go. I love my Gradient.
