N Wisconsin and so much more!
by Kevin
I'm considering a trip to Northern WI over the long weekend of the 4th. Can anybody out there help me out with info on the Wolf, Peshtigo, Pike, and/or Menominee rivers. (Any information will be helpfull).
My other options seem to be Madawaska, Petawawa, and maybee the Ottowa, or possibly French Broad, Pigeon, Ocoee, and (yawn) the Nantahala.
If any of you c-boaters out there are going to be on any of these rivers on the weekend of the 4th, and you don't mind some company, drop me a line. If you ain't boatin' but one of these is a river that you're real familiar with and you'd care help me figure out what direction I might like to do my long distance driving- well...also drop me a line.
Valuable information might include stuff like:
- low water runs on the Little Yucky are not worth it
- IMHO the Big Stinky is way harder/easier than it's rated on AW's website
- the lower section of the Beaver Bladder (from Rt. 17 to the RR bridge near the Slawson cutoff) is the prettiest class III creek I've ever paddled
- when we ran the Pemigwamsikett last Fall, we stayed at Irma's Boater Friendly Campground in Wankerville, and it was only $4 per tent, with free foot massages!
- a permit is now required to run the 26 Falls section of the Burnt Umber, and they are expesive/must be obtained at the ranger station two counties over
- etc.
Thanks,
Kevin

Wolf section III is currently at a decent level (500). Much below 400 the upper portion (Boy Scout Rapids) gets annoyingly bony. This section has a couple of decent boulder garden runs (Boy Scout and Hansons) with play opportunites. The run ends right at Gilmore's Mistake, the best play spot/rapids on the section. You can walk/rerun both Hansons and Gilmores easily. Gilmores also has park/play capability.
Section IV of the Wolf requires a $25 shuttle/permit to enter the Reservation. I've never paddled this section.
The Red has releases mid-afternoon. One class III drop (Monastery), and a couple fun class II's. It's an easier river the the Wolf. Both have great scenery.

Thanks for the info Kurt- especially considering how freakish my post sounds (in retrospect). What can I say, I was WAY bored!
