New c-1er needs playboating advice
by Mike Harvey

I just started c-1ing this summer after ten years of kayaking. I have a playboating technique question. I can cartwheel pretty well on my on-side (righty) but how do I initiate and throw leftys. I can not initiate them very well by just planting my fist...any advice?

plant a crossbow stroke with the paddle nearly horizontal with the water. get some water with your paddle and pull towards you meanwhile pull in with your right leg.

the cross stroke suggested above is a good one, as long as the hole is not too trashy. I try to avoid pulling human pretzel moves (aka cross strokes) in trashy holes. What about intiating with your stern rather than your bow? This starts things going for me quite well offside. Otherwise, throw a splitwheel during your onside cartwheels and perhaps that will help change sides yet keep throwing ends.

Me, I start with my fist and get a low angle end, or more often initiate the stern first. I'm no expert on cartwheels, but this works for me.
