C-1 Flatwater Ideas
by Bruce Alexander Bruce Alexander

I am interested in converting a recreational kayak (like a Necky Garnet) for flat water C-1 paddling. I am an intermediate flat water and white water paddler. I also weight over 200lbs. Any suggestions for a saddle kit (ala Mike Yee) or kayak?

Why in the world would you want to paddle C-1 on flatwater for fun?

I would recommend like a 12" saddle, cause I know my 7" saddle kills me after about an hour and a half, two if I'm having fun. You're hard core.

The reason to paddle flatwater is to go FASTFASTFAST...

If you are really doing this to paddle flatwater...why not just go OC-1? There are dozens of boats out there way lots more fun on flatwater than a fat, heavy converted k***k.

There are OC-1's for every possibility...from screamers to gunk-holers. And a fun whitewater boat is going to be a dog for recreational flatwater -- unless you are doing serious fw w.o.'s in a wildwater boat.

This doesn't sound to me like a good idea unless you are actually looking to do something different from what your post implies..

Fast C-1's

Why don't you try a C-1 Wildwater boat.
1. They go fast.
2. You could get a good flatwater workout.
3. You can paddle them in whitewater if you want.

I think someone was selling a Tip Top on the Forum a couple of months ago..

Good Luck....DM

Someone was, and I bought it....

for just those reasons. In the pics the seat looks to be about 1.5 inches high! That might need some adjusting!

marathon c-1
by dick

you should get a marathon racing c-1. they are really fast. the only thing is you sit instead of kneal, but that means you can paddle farther.

I think there are other boats that might be better

There are some other kayaks that might make better c-1s (I'm not sure what you are thinking of doing with it, but hey, I'll go with the flow...)

For flatwater, length is speed. So boats over 10' would be good. The Pirouette S, which I used to paddle, was fun in either flat or ww, so you could convert a Pirouette (and they can be had cheap!)

The Dagger Crossover would make an interesting C-1, or the Animas.

The benefit of these boats is that they are still made for whitewater, so if youended up in an expedition with these boats and encountered whitewater, they could handle it well.

But I wonder about the logic of making a C-1 for flatwater. Still, I live in Florida and at times have thought of doing the same thing for various reasons.

I'm interested, so email me with some moreinformation.
