I haven't been succesful either. I don't think it has much to do with the hand slapping on the surface other than you have to cock your body that way to initiate the c to c. What matters is what can't be seen. Lower leg strength and timing. I plan to practice this summer in shallow water when I'm not worn out. The shallow water is for when I fail I can push off the bottom to get back up. I would like to know if there is a good exercise to increase the leg strength, counter rotation motion that can be practiced out of the boat.

I try it allways with a lifejacket on a rope. So I pull always on the rope when I fail(every time :-?)

Good Luck

Not sure there's much strength involved. It's 99.9% technique. Hip snap and timing. If you want to do strenthening exercises, work on your abdominals.

try this!!
try rolling with your paddle in hand,
once underwater,
take your bottom hand off your paddle and try rolling with your top hand on the T grip. Once you can do this, get rid of the paddle and try the hand roll.

Its all technique, no strength.

Good luck

I like the lifejacket and the single hand on the paddle advice.

I tried hand rolling last year without success and these posts have got me thinking that I should try it again.

I love this forum!

I like the single had trick too..must try.

Its all in the snap & body action. Any drill that improves that will help. A good drill is to go back to the old beginner drill where you get a helper to stand beside you with hands at surface level. Flip & grab the hand & snap up. Then gradually try to use less & less pressure on the helper's hand. After you & the helper get in sync, do a continuous roll. Let the helper "help" you find the hand so you make a continuous roll with just a slight bit of help. Really concentrate on developing body action & a fast, sharp snap. Yes, this is what you did learning to roll at first, but you may be surprised how much you depend on your paddle now since you first did that beginner drill! Now use the helper so you can concentrate on the hand-roll action and how to maximize it...until eventually you do it without the helper's help. .

The other trick I learned is the T-grip roll: grasp your paddle reversed: ie, the T-grip hand holding the blade & the T-grip extended out where the blade should be. It takes a really sharp snap to roll this way. And of course, the foam-block roll: instead of a life jacket, use a piece of 1" ethafoam say 8" x 12". Then keep cutting it down.

None of these exactly mimics the hand roll motion, but they require a really fast snap, and will help to improve any roll.

Of course, the best thing is to be really long in the waist & have a reach like a gorilla. Then everything works.
