I have just about decided on a new compposite helmet, I'll probably get a Galasport aramid/carbon full cut helmet, I really like the protetion it gives. But for running shallow stuff I would like to add a face guard, preferably a wire cage design, since I still spend to much time upside down . (I currently use my Lacrosse/Hockey helmet with face cage when paddling shallow stuff).
Does anyone know where I can get a face guard that would fit this helmet? Would a canoe/kayak polo face guard work?

Predator does a face guard which you screw in at 3 points - works for helmets with ear protection- should be available at MEC, or other models with face guard already installed. If not maybe at the adventure sports store in Waterloo which sells a lot of kayaks....

Cascade also makes one that screws in ....I jujst bought one about a month ago from Bushtukah in Ottawa. They were clearing them out end of season and had a few left for $33 I think.

BTW - Have you chceked the stiffness of those Galasport helmets in the flesh (so to speak) ... a friend of mine commented at one point that he didn't think they were that sturdy....he went with the Prijon full-coverage composite helmet instead.

Is the Cascade face guard the one with one bar going across your chin and a nose bar connecting the center of the rim of the helmet with the chin bar? I know a few people who use those, but I feel they still leave a lot of the face exposed, and I would like to have a little more protection. I was thinking rather about a cage style guard, I have seen poeple with those on the river, but I don't know where I could get one of those.
I have actually never had one of the Galasport helmets in my hands, but I know a few poeple who use them and they all love them. I looked at the Prijon composite helmet, I don't think it provides as much coverage as the Galasport does.
Have you heard anything about them actually having problems, I would really like to know that, before I spend all the money.

I haven't heard nor seen any specific negative issues with the Galasport helmets....it was more along the ines of a comment that they seemed fairly flexible and flimsy whereas the Prijon Protector was a really solid, stiff design - kind of like comparing the stiffness of the Cascade helmets to that of a Protec. You're right though, looking at the pictures again I see that the Prijon does offer less coverage, or atleast it appears to based on the location of the adjuster for the back of the head.

As to the face guard - I think I was mistaken calling it a Cascade face guard - it's not listed on their website. Their website only lists their Chin Bar, which I think is fairly worthless. The face guard I have looks to be similar to the ones from their Lacrosse line. I think it is the one shown here:

Martin, you're cruisin for a pain-boater status, and I think you're gonna get there pretty quick!

Just don't get the same helmet Martyn has - I want to be able to tell youguys apart! well - as long as Martyn doesn't grow a beard we'll be ok!

Well, I just realized what kind of face guard this is, and it is indeed on the Cascade website, but it is actually inthe lacrosse and not the watersports section, this is the face guard that is installed on all their lacrosse helmets.

and Mike, Congrats for reaching C-boater status. Now you are only another 25 posts away from pain boater status.
And don't worry, I won't get the same helmet as Martyn, and I'll keep my beard (it keeps my face warm in the winter and keeps the bugs away in the summer), and the ponytail will also stay until I strt to go bald . So you should, despite both of us paddling green Preludes still be able to keep us apart.
