three person saddle

i am going to outfit an old XL13 for the college outdoor center i work at. we wanted to put in one of the 3 seat saddles so that the boat can be used solo or tandem. problem is, i cant find who made them, or any pictures of it. i would like to build it myself, but i dont remember exactly what it looks like. does anyone have a picture, or know who makes the saddle? --- joey

no. i was looking for one of the old saddles that used thigh straps. if i remember correctly, NOC used to offer it with there custome outfitting. --- joey

I think I have the saddle you are looking for in my Probe. It is the older style Mohawk outfitting (even spacing and thigh straps). You can try calling them and seeing if they have any left. If you want to make one I can send you the measurements. I can also send you pictures if you give me your address.

Is it the perception saddle your talking about? And are you sure you really want this?

Near Gemini tandem can give you a pretty good solo position in 13 or 14' boat. I think the caption, for example handles pretty well for a "big" 14' boat--if some weight is added in bow.

I have an XL 13 which has been a good boat to learn an play in. I no longer use it, but lend it out to friends. I would be curious to know how your conversion works. My concern is that the tandem team combined weight is limited to 250 pounds, otherwise the boat is going to be sluggish. I paddled a C-2 for the first time this year and its effective length was about 14' and that felt perfect for our combined weight of 280 lbs. Well good luck.

Just remembered the site as I made an inquiry to buy the boat in the picture for a friend of mine. You could email the guy brian at address below, who sold the boat, and ask if he could connect you with buyers--thus getting dimensions from them. Kind of contorted but could work. But....The triple saddle places tandem paddlers much further apart than desired for performance end of things. But if just for learning paddlers at a paddle center, then I guess it wouldn't matter. Apparently folks that would like to roll the boat don't like the triple saddle as it act like a big baffle and is fairly heavy. Again, you may just consider the gemini seating of 2 Mike Yee-like saddles---as paddling solo from the stern seat in our caption is surprisingly good (again, need to weight the bow a bit).

It is the same saddle that I have so I'll save you some time. It is 6" wide and 64" long. 4" of the length is an extension for foot pegs )behind the rear thwart) so the actual saddle is 60" long. The total height is 14 1/2". the seat is 13 3/4" across. The square between the seat is 4" long. I can give you more measurements and take pictures if you need them.

The saddles in that last picture are the "Team Edge" outfitting that Mohawk used to put in their boats - there were also single and doubles of that set up. That set up was frequently paired with a set of double thigh straps. Frankie Hubbard designed and/or made that system. The "baffle" mentioned when rolling was corrected by many paddlers (including me!) by boring large holes through the saddle at the floor.
