denver-area boating

Post by Drew W. »

so my co-op job is going to afford me an opportinuty to work around Denver, CO for a semester (most likely fall '05)
anyone have comments on how the boating is around there that time of the year? I know it's a little far into the future, but I'm bored, and the thought popped into my head :P
also, is there a c-community there? I've heard things like some CO boaters saw a cboater running something and broke out the rescue gear because they thought he was a kayaker with a broken paddle, but that sounds a little ridiculous to me

I think you'll be ok

boaters in Colorado have seen C1's before, so I think you just might be ok. although some things run into fall and even now, the mainstay is dependent on snowmelt, albeit most everything is released. Gore Canyon is still runnable, I think, and so is Shoshone on the Colorado and a few other things. None of which I'm up on as had shoulder surgery 3 mos ago. If you come in Sept you will probably miss out on Arkansas, Poudre and other of the more talked about runs.

Golden is usually only going well til end of July or sometime before. All is really snow pack dependent. Suggest you take a look at moutainbuzz.com as that is a big paddling site, albeit most folks using it are kayakers. You will still pick up some very good info there and it is visited by a smattering of open-boaters as well. There is a very good link on site to Colorado runs; the colors ratings for current flow are pretty reasonable. Lots of open-boaters in the area, a few C1 ers as mentioned, and a couple of very strong canoe clubs: Rocky mountain canoe club and Poudre Paddlers. Both have web sites.
