Hi Nam,
I would think it's impossible because the W boat concept is about offering the best stability and control to the paddler so he/she can stay in the boat and not have to recover it, and rolling is essentially a recovery technique for unstable kayaks.
Having said that maybe it is possible since some people can roll their canoes and others can roll very wide SOT kayaks.

Anyway, rolling a W boat would require using a spray skirt and probably strapping oneself to the boat, and since even W-surfers (ocean) normally don't use spray skirts it's unlikely that anyone would be experimenting in W-rolling in the near future.

I was perusing some verrrrrry old e-mail and I found that I had actually exchanged an e-mail or two with $ponson-man back before he went completely around the bend. Wherever he is, I hope he is on good meds.

The way it works (US Patent # 6,871,608) is like that:

You balance and control a W boat by using your legs and your feet that rest firmly at the bottom of each hull (this is the correct term )
BTW--This W1 is just 25" wide

As you can see canoe paddles work fine with W boats, even when the paddlers are not very experienced

..and you can even use a long canoe paddle and paddle standing (XL paddle courtesy of Mohawk Canoes)


So, if you can sit and kneel in this boat and paddle with a canoe paddle - what's the problem?

Me thinks you may have missed Craig's reference to an unpleasant period on the rec.boats.paddle newsgroup that some would say is one of the causes of it's significant decline. There was a certain individual who became quite shrill in the advocacy of his own, inflatable stability enhancers, the name of which we avoid using. The conversation degraded to the point of obscenity - not in the use of objectionable words so much as inflammatory speech "if you don't see the need for the use of my patented product then you are a murderer and party to the slaughter of innocent Boy Scouts, Youth Groups, and various and sundry innocents. Rolling is a myth and a party trick, and an instrument of dark forces to deplete our numbers". The use of the dread "S" word was avoided because he would descend on any thread loosely connected to his raison detre. We're pretty sure he was/is mentally ill. Many complained to his ISP, they may have revoked his account.

Right about then BoaterTalk became a notable forum. I think ole Timmy showed up there for a little while. And not long after that the precursor to this little board popped up.

That's probably more history than you wanted. Hadn't thought about that in a while... Sometimes I wonder if ole Timmy finally got the help he needed. In a padded rubber room...

I thought "...the word that shall not be spoken!" was banded from all forums on the web by the cyber cops everwhere!

[I'm sorry, but international treaties forbid the correct spelling or presentation of the subject word.] Though that search does not return near as many threads/posts as I remember, it may give you some sense of the flame wars. Another couple of search strings to try are "burntnjall" and "Scott Weiser". Between those three, rec/boats.paddle pretty much went down the toilet.

Oh man, I remember that stuff. That guy was a whack job. I remember Charlie Walbridge posted something about a rescue and the the "S" word that shall remain unspoken guy just totally started going off on it. He would post like a million times for each thread. I remember that he said, "any rescue that requires practice is obviously unreliable and lethal" (meaning eskimo rolling). He also believed that the kayak industry was purposely making tippy boats so that it could sell "deadly instruction." Each time he mentioned "lifejacket" I thought of perhaps a safer type of jacket that he should have been wearing . . .

S P N S N was one of the most frightening words on the internet a few years back. He was "that-kid" on the school bus that was going to sue everyone. The kook even wrote a book about how the entire paddling industry, instructors and people on message boards where out to get him.

There where some funny things thought up by folks like X-mas tree $ p 0 n s 0 n s, bicycle $ p 0 n s 0 n s, and my personal favorite helmet $ p 0 n s 0 n s.

To this day I can't even type the word correctly in fear that he will track me down and spam me.... freaky.
