Safety boaters needed for Xterra triathlon swim
Posted: Tue Jun 21, 2005 9:51 pm
I'm the local swim course coordinator for Xterra's East Coast Triathlon to be held here in Richmond, Va. I am also gathering as many safety boaters as we can get to help on the swim course. There will be 2 races on Sunday, July 3 (the first one starting at 8:00 a.m., the second starts at 10:30 a.m.). Mike W. has helped in the past and can attest to what it is like to help out, but he is not able to make it this year. Post here or send me a PM if you are interested in helping. If you are coming from out-of-area and would need a place to crash, you are welcome to stay at our house (that way, we can get more boatin' in! ). Typically, boaters will:
- show up by 7:00 a.m. and review the course (hmm, that time of morning will definitely lose me potential volunteers )
- bring standard paddling gear (pfd, helmet, throw rope)
- have a longer boat with volume (short, low-volume boats do POORLY as rest stations and rescue platforms! )
- help swimmers stay within the course, provide a rest station for winded/disoriented swimmers and possibly assist with an emergency extraction (has not happened to-date)
- dismantle the swim course
As an aside, Sportsbackers (Jon Lugbill as executive director) will be hosting their second downriver race on the James. There are also other whitewater paddling events going on through the weekend, so go to http://www.sportsbackers.com for more info on these events. The downriver race should end up being a grudge match between me and two other kyackers. I was just a few seconds behind the lead boater (a kyacker ) when, as we were coming up on the finish, the 3rd place boater (a kyacker ) took a short cut to the finish line and beat both of us for the first place victory . ! Now, it will be interesting to see if those two show up along with me.
Evidence of the way the finish SHOULD have been:

The boater in the orange boat is the "culprit"
