Anyone out there planning to attend the CCC Invasion of the Lower Yough? This years assalt will be Aug 12th.13th and 14th and should be a hoot. Last year's CCC attendance was 74 paddlers (mostly butt boaters) and should be at least that this year. Rose and I are planning to drive up from Oklahoma and make our first appearance. I will be bringing my Super EZ, Dagger GTX and my Cascade C-1's. You are more than welcome to try out any of them. We shouldn't be hard to find as we will be tent camping in the park.

I'm also planning on being there- however, I signed up with the canoe group, and the leader really wants them to be all open boaters- I've really enjoyed my 3 month conversion to c1- and cant imagine going in an open boat- SO I need to ensure the TL will accept a deck canoe in his group. Otherwise I will try to get a back up slot.

Well darn my schedule....

Looks like I’ll now be on the LY during that timeframe. Surprising this is also the weekend of the Three Rivers Paddling Club’s Turkey Bash (paddling clinics and Turkey Dinner on Sat. night) so the river (and swimmers) will be "busy" to say the least. I know that there is a TRPC canoe clinic on both days so the Cs should be well represented.
Bill - sorry I had my dates wrong so I hope I can hook up with you! If you have trouble getting a launch slot let me know and I'll see if I can help out.
One note - I’ll be dropping off my kids for kayak clinics on both days so I’ll be rushing around a bit but I should be on by 11ish I would think.
I don’t believe Big Al or I have a class as of right now so we should be available to show the lines / play spots to anyone if interested. I'll "twist" his arm (offer him a beer) to go with us!
As for boats - I’ll have my WB and can bring the Full Cut Acrobat or Viper if there is interest! Just let me know and I hope to CU there!

Awesome Pac- I'll head up and if I'm an outcast with the open boaters maybe I can tag along with you. I'll have the wheelboy and Sith and maybe the bigboy.

Paul,
I'm going to be down in Ohiopyle that weekend also. I'm leading a trip for the Columbus paddling club on the Lower both weekend days. We are putting on before 8 AM both days. The husband and wife C-1ers from Cols that I paddle with are also coming. (I used her Skip at Swimmer's before I bought my own).
Anyhow , hope to see you out there. I don't paddle much these days;house remodeling and Diane's pregancy have backseated my paddling adventures.
Eric
good news....

Great news Eric on the family thing! Hopefully you "planned" well enough to make it to the Gauley too!
Give Diane our best!
Looking forward to the weekend and hooking up with lots of folks. I'm sure we'll meet up at swimmers at the very least. I borrowed one of your friends boats last year at Swimmers too - believe he has a Pop (couldn't fit into the Skip
) and had a nice cross X lap belt set up!
Saw Shawn from Clev last weekend so let the Cing continue!

I will be in the area paddling also. I plan on driving in Thrusday night and paddling the Upper Yough both Friday and Sunday, then driving back Saturday night or Sunday morning. Our Group will be staying at Tall Oaks between the Lower Yough and the Cheat.
I haven't run the Upper since I gave up my training paddle, and I'm pretty excited and nervous.
Maybe I'll see some of ya'll around.
Take It Easy,

I live in PA and often boat the LY. No permits are required midweek (you still have to purchase shuttle tokens to get the bus ride from the takeout to the parking lot). You can put on and go when you want to. I can probably arrange to be there on Friday, even Thursday if you come early. Not sure if I'd want to stay for Saturday (very crowded but not as bad as the Ocoee). However there is a reasonably good chance that the Cheat might be running. It is now very low but got some rain today, the Dry Fork is rising. They are expecting intermittent thunderstorms Mon - Wed. If the Cheat IS running on Saturday it is a much better run than the LY (longer, more rapids, less flatwater, a few more difficult rapids but scoutable, & I know the lines fairly well. Plus there is the famous Glen Miller shuttle ride, some people paddle the river just for Glen's ride. I lead our local club's annual "first-timers" trip on the Cheat.

Hi Lee
I met a guy from PA on the Nanty today- he is a member of LVCC- Hope your trip to NC went well. I'd like to paddle on Fri with you and/or have you join us- I'm supposed to paddle with one of the Carolina Canoe Clubs instructors, with my buddy David and about 7 other canoeist- I'm riding with NCDavid - would it be just you?
I'm not sure if I'll be in my tandem Blast or a cboat next weekend- the blast allows me to not have to work on balancing, the Cheat would probably be more dificult than Id be comfortable with right now- it seems muscular exertion really irritates the ribs. loading the boats last night initially made me think I wasnt paddling today- as it was I only surfed 2x and basically only caught onside eddies.

I'm not sure if I'd be alone or with a couple friends. Several of us who paddle midweek don't make plans very far in advance. From your prior post it seemed iffy as to whether you'd be welcome in the open boat group.
I understand about the injury; I was hit from behind by an out of control skier last spring. My left shoulder took the brunt of the landing; it never healed completely. I finally went for an MRI, consultation with an upper-body orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday. I have limited myself to nothing more difficult than the Cheat so far this year.

Hi Larry,
I'm paddling with Lee tentatively at 10:00 on Friday-
On Saturday I'm paddling with PAC. The open boater crowd is actually very nice- I dont want to give the wrong idea- but I guess it would be like getting 10 c boaters together to run a river- how often are their 10 in a group- so he had a vision-
I enjoy meeting new folks- its great having friends to paddle with in different states.
I converted a GUS last night- we'll see how she does- this will be my first river trip in a conversion (one of the days anyway)

bill,
how about passing on some feedback on the gus when you get back. i picked one up a couple of months ago, but haven't started on converting it yet. it would be good to hear about anything i need to consider before getting started. hope you have a great trip.

Thurs cheat narrow- David aqnd I got on the river about 5- for about a 4.2 mile trip- it was a lot of fun-starting to get comfortable playing in small holes but I had a swim.
Fri Lower Yough: Lee C1 Atom, Ed Evangalini, Don k1, Jon k1 and Terry k1 and I paddled the Lower Yough- put on time about 11- I saw a Dagger GT c1 (was that you Larry?) I had a really good time, one nice surf on swimmers. The river was a lot of fun, I paddled the Sith and it performed really nicely-
Sat Cheat Canyon: Lee, Ed and Steve, K1 ran the canyon. I was in my GUS c1 conversion- new river and first time the C1 GUS had seen any water. I used the Drakkar saddle which has slots which accepted the foam support walls so no new holes were needed- The gus did really well, but I havent "paddled" a c1 conversion, though I've tried two, anyway it was a little more narrow than I would choose, but it did really well- I think I need some more time in it- the only other aspect of it as a c1 I did not like was there is a rail (groove) which comes into the hull and pushes against my knee- other than this rail and the width I think the boat is a good one- it is pretty fast- the level was 1.3 so it was low but I didn't have any problems with holes, and it was able to make some really quick turns!
Sun Lower Yough: PAC c1, Rocky k1, Steve k1, and myself GUS c1 again. The current was a little pushier than Fri- this is when I felt the GUS was too narow- but I think I just would need to get used to a more narrow boat- but I also made an impressive move (for me around a really tight turn and was surprised at how well the GUS turned here. The boat was also faster than the Sith or Wheelboy and I was able to make an offside ferry that I had to peel out on on Fri.
It was an awesome trip- and great to see old friends and make new ones while visiting PA.
Thanks especially to Lee and PAC for their guide services

Bill It was my pleasure to paddle with you and you didn't need any guide services. You were doing quite well on your own! Oh and thanks for loaning me the Sith to Demo out. It's a bit big for me (need a smaller cut at 5'8" #185) but it was a blast at the lower level. I was able to surf waves that the kayaks couldn't get on and was starting to get the feel for playing with it too! We only paddled the Loop (7 rapids). A very enjoyable boat! Thanks again!
Oh if you don't head to Canada over the end of month and "need a road trip" the Over the Falls race is scheduled for 8/27-28!
Lots of fun! Keep me posted!
